"Wings"
Song

"Wings" is a single by British girl group Little Mix taken from their debut album DNA. The single is the group's first original track, and their second overall, following their The X Factor winning single "Cannonball". "Wings" was originally due to be released on 19 August 2012, but was pushed back and was released on 26 August 2012. The single made its first official airplay on BBC Radio 1 on 2 July. On 19 July, the song was playlisted on Capital FM.

Background

On 30 May 2012, Little Mix announced through a live stream via Twitcam that their debut single would be called "Wings". On 1 June, they appeared on Alan Carr: Chatty Man and shared a 30-second snippet of the song. When asked about the song, Jade Thirlwall commented, saying "There's old-school and lots of group harmonies with modern beats. It's pretty exciting". The girls have also cited Beyoncé Knowles and Michael Jackson as influences on the song.[1] The song made its first radio airplay on BBC Radio 1 on 2 July 2012.[2] On 23 July, Little Mix released a magazine as part of their Mixer's Monday, and in the magazine, it contained secret lyrics from when they wrote 'Wings'. These lyrics were: "Daddy told me not to play with fire / He said trust your dreams and they will take you higher / Keep your head when others lose their mind / And they can't detain you".[3]

Critical reception

"Wings" received positive reviews from music critics upon its premiere. The Guardian stated the song is "brilliant", and that "it's got everything you'd want to hear in a pop song in 2012."[4] Digital Spy gave the song four out of five stars, commenting that it is "a seriously promising start" and "living up to expectations".[5] However, Katherine St Asaph of PopDust.com wrote a mixed review: "The post-Adele retro (the horns in the beginning, the general structure) doesn’t quite coexist with everything else the producers have added, like the laser zaps that could’ve come from the studio one room over mixing a K-pop song. Yet somehow, improbably, 'Wings' takes off anyway; handclaps and big voices with well-timed harmonies tend to do so. Maybe that’s why they left in the lyric 'no matter if I fall from the sky, these wings were made to fly,'." She rated the single 3 out of 4 stars.[6]

Chart performance

"Wings" topped the Irish Singles Chart and also the UK Singles Chart with 106,766 sales in its first week.[7] Wings reached number three in Australia following their live performance on The X Factor (Australia). The song also reached 15 in New Zealand as well as Top 30 in 3 other countries.

Live performances

Little Mix performed the song for the first time at the T4 on the Beach concert on 1 July.[2][8] They also performed on Friday Download on 13 July, and on the second episode of the second series of Red or Black?, which aired on 25 August. On 18 July, the group performed a live acoustic session of "Wings" on In:Demand.[9] They also performed at G-A-Y Heaven on 18 August, which was celebrating their first birthday as a group. The Little Mix girls also released an acoustic version of 'Wings' in late august. On September 3, after they reached number one with Wings, the performed on the relaunch show of Daybreak. On 30 October and 31 October, the quartet performed on The X Factor (Australia) and Sunrise respectively.

Music video

The lyric video for the song was released on the official Vevo page of the band on 1 July 2012.[10] The music video premiered online on Wednesday 25 July 2012,[11] featuring the group singing in an abandoned warehouse. They are individual scenes that shows each of the members inside separate rooms with different backgrounds and mirrors to either side: Jesy is in a room full of speakers and boomboxes, Jade is in room filled with bow ties, Perrie is inside a room with flowers and vinyl records, and Leigh-Anne in a room with a graffiti wall bearing a prominent image of a snapback. Later on a group of back-up dancers joins the group as they all dance together along a purple and pink Union Jack backdrop.
