Career

Crystal Palace

2011–12

Williams made his breakthrough into the Crystal Palace first team at the very beginning of the 2011-2012 season after much hype surrounding his performances for the academy and reserve side the previous term. He made his debut coming on as a second half substitute at home to Coventry City on 16 August 2011. Just one week later Williams made his full first team debut in the opening game of the 2011-12 League Cup game at home to Crawley Town. He played 85 minutes, grabbing his first assist before getting a standing ovation from the home crowd. The Wales U21 international, who went to Bennett Memorial Diocesan School in Tunbridge Wells, scored his first professional goal for Crystal Palace on 13 September 2011 against Wigan Athletic in the League cup. Williams added his 2nd assist of the season in the League Cup during the third round tie against Middlesbrough F.C.. Williams made his first league start for the club and played a vital role away to arch rivals Brighton and Hove Albion where The Eagles came from a goal down to win 3-1 in what was a very memorable night for the fans and players alike. Williams got his 3rd assist of the season in a league home game against West Ham United flicking the ball across for Darren Ambrose to finish from the edge of the 18 yard box. Williams then came off the bench at home to Bristol City F.C. on 18 October 2011, winning a penalty that was converted by Glenn Murray. A week later in the 4th round of the League Cup, Williams got his 4th assist of the season as he crossed for Darren Ambrose to open the scoring and later won a penalty which was converted by Jermaine Easter.

On 15 November 2011, Williams suffered a broken fibula in his right leg whilst on U21 International duty with Wales which forced him to miss the 2nd and most of the final 3rd of the season. After 3 months out with a broken leg Williams returned to the starting line-up in what was his first game since the injury on 17 March 2012 at home to Hull City playing 71 minutes. Williams only made a handful of appearances after his return from injury as the coaching staff wanted to give him enough to time rest enabling him to regain full fitness in time for the start of the new season. He ended the season having played in 18 first team games. On the 10th May 2012, Williams signed a 5 year contract keeping him at the club until July 2017. He is considered one of the best young players on Crystal Palace's books, and is known for his excellent ball control, passing abilities and vision.

2012-13

Williams played in 4 pre-season games prior to the season, recovering from his broken leg, although on the last game against Reading, he was brought off due to a slight calf injury, forcing him to miss the first four games of the season. After Williams recovered from his injury, he came on as a sub on 1 September against Sheffield Wednesday, Palaces first win of the season.
