In Smurf Rescue, even stumbling over a few weeds can be fatal.

Smurf Rescue is a Colecovision game in which the player must brave a series of obstacles to rescue Smurfette. On higher levels of difficulty, bats attack the player.

Game Play

Gargamel has kidnapped Smurfette and taken her to his house. As a Smurf you have to walk from the Smurf village through the forest and a cave, making your way to Gargamels house, where Smurfette is waiting to be rescued.

As a Smurf, you had an energy bar that slowly depleted, a tactic repeated in the Adventure Island games for the NES. Each side-scrolling screen had various objects that you had to properly jump over and land precisely on the hit-points spot (i.e. blades of grass, ledges, or cave spikes). Failure to perform each jump perfectly resulted in instant death. Higher difficult levels introduced flying bats that needed to be avoided and spiders that needed to be jumped over.

The final, and most difficult jump, involves jumping onto a human skull, and then jumping onto a table where Smurfette is standing.

The Smurf Rescue game was available on both the Coleco and Atari 2600 platforms.

Smurf Rescue was infamous for an Easter Egg in the programming. When the Smurf reaches the screen where the Smurfette is located, the player can go backwards to the previous screen. If he does, just before the screen changes, it will look as if the top of Smurfette's dress comes off; making her appear topless.
