Bitcasa, Inc., is a start-up company, founded in 2011 and led by CEO Tony Gauda and co-founders Kevin Blackham and Joel Andren, headquartered in Mountain View, California,[1] offering unlimited data storage as a cloud service.

A patented algorithm reduces the actual storage need by identifying duplicate content, and provides encryption of the stored data.[2] However, the patent is not yet identified.[3]

Bitcasa provides client software for for web browsers, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows. Also mobile apps are available for Android and iOS platforms.

History

The service was first launched at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco in September 2011, where it was among the finalists.[4] CrunchFund is an investor in Bitcasa.[4]

Technology

Bitcasa launched into a landscape full of competitors in cloud storage, but their storage method of encryption is unique.[specify] Employees at Bitcasa can not access the data stored on their servers, they don't have encryption keys. The encryption method works by cloaking the data while it is still on your system, only then are the blocks sent by an enterprise-grade AES-256 encryption.[5] The removal of any humans in the process ensures data will be protected in the transfer from hard drive to the cloud. Bitcasa is the only service that completely gives users access and ownership rights to their data. [6]
