The article declares standard usage by saying "We will call the horizontal element of this distance dx, and the vertical element dy." but in the image these labels are reversed. The dx and dy should be swapped in this image to avoid confusion. The image may be redundant for this particular article, in which case it could just be removed, but if other articles also link to it then it should be corrected. |

The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

Article(s): List of Australian flags
Request: Create an SVG file of the flag proposals linked above.
Graphist opinion(s): I'll work on some of the PD ones. Fry1989 eh? 22:34, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
- I've done all the ones that require original drawing except Blaxand's (which is far too complicated and precise to do quickly) and Coulin's (which is again quite detailed but the image's resolution makes it difficult). I'll leave the rest for you to finish. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:10, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
- Done Blaxland's, although I uploaded it as "Blaxand" in error. NikNaks talk - gallery 16:34, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- Additionally to my comment on #Proposed New Zealand flags (probably wrong license tag) I just realized that the flags vectorized by NikNaks carry wrong author information (you're not the author, even if the vectorizzation was done by you!). While a wrong license tag may still be acceptable for most of the original authors I'm sure they don't like it if they're not properly credited. -- Patrick87 (talk) 16:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that Fry intended to finish the ones that are not done here and then clean up the licensing. I'll drop him a message and see if he has any insight. As for the author information, I did and uploaded most of these in an afternoon, so I admit I was a little sloppy. I'll fix the authorship information (I tend to include myself alongside the author of the raster version and/or design - if this is wrong, let me know) but I'll wait for further information regarding licensing. NikNaks talk - gallery 16:48, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Well, actually I thought (from the first comment) he only wanted to work on those that were eligible for public domain because of {{pd-shape}}. All the others would require a different license and I'm afraid I don't know if there is any compatible license tag. Besides that it's fine if you include yourself in the author field (I do that myself from time to time if it needed some effort of myself to get the vectorization right) but strictly speaking by vectorizing an image there's no changed authorship of the result at all. -- Patrick87 (talk) 17:03, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

- I've fixed the authorship problem but the licensing one remains. I really have little knowledge of this, so I'll have to defer to someone with more experience. NikNaks talk - gallery 17:16, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Most of these designs are too simple for copyright, some though I would be wary of. Fry1989 eh? 23:15, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Are they too simple for copyright under Australian law, though? I've never really had to delve into the Commons copyright policy before. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:22, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that strictly speaking anything with a kangaroo in it probably isn't {{PD-shape}}. Even the ones with a boomerang in it could be disputable. However I'm no expert in copyright law (but who on Wikipedia is one after all?). -- Patrick87 (talk) 14:50, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- For ones like Tony Burton or Frank Gentil or David Couzens, I'd say absolutely too simple. Ones like Russell Kennedy is less clear, and Dr John Blaxland with that very complicated star, I'd be very wary about. Ones with a kangaroo are iffy depending on where you got it. After all, we do have tha RAAF ensign and roundel which contain a roo, you could claim derivative work on it if you used the roo from those files. Fry1989 eh? 14:54, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- The kangaroos are all subtly different from each other (and the roundel) and I traced them all individually. I'm not sure how that would help anyway? If I'm following the discussion correctly, all the designs other than those with simple southern crosses almost certainly need to move across to enwiki. NikNaks talk - gallery 16:33, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- That's a little bit of an over-simplification. I can give a list of ones I think are questionable. Fry1989 eh? 16:54, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

First image Done
Article(s): Leg before wicket (this is the one the image is needed for, but the file is also used at Cricket field and Cricket pitch)
Request: I'm not too sure if I'm in the right place or not. Would it be possible to remove the text from this image? Particularly that at the bottom by the stumps. I'm not sure how this works, but it may be better to create a new image rather than simply change this one. In addition, would there be any way to create an image similar to the one on this page? (It may need someone familiar with cricket and the lbw law!) It would be similar to the one which exists with arrows showing the ball landing in different parts of the pitch. Thanks. Sarastro1 (talk) 17:53, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Request taken by -- Orionist ★ talk 06:48, 15 March 2013 (UTC).
- Yes, you've come to the right place for image making, maybe not so much for cricket knowledge. But we are accustomed here to handling requests on all kinds of subjects, as we rely on the guidance of the requester and any references they provide. So, I'll recreate the image you linked and we can change it later if anything is incorrect. Cheers! -- Orionist ★ talk 06:48, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- That's perfect. To be honest, it would be fine just to have this image. However, if a set of images could be produced with a little more on, that may be helpful. The best way to see what I mean is to check the link above, but I was wondering if something could be done to show the flight of a cricket ball, where it bounces, and whether it will hit the stumps or not. The link shows it better than I can explain it; could anything like that be done? Sarastro1 (talk) 22:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- A set of images like the BBC link is totally doable. I just need you to provide me with a couple of free photos that show a bowler and a batter in a similar position to the BBC image. It doesn't matter if they're low-res or blurry, I just need to trace the body shape to give the illustration a bit of realism. Everything else (ball path etc.) can be done easily. Cheers! -- Orionist ★ talk 04:47, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
- No problem. Maybe the left hand image here or this one for the batsman, and maybe this or this for the bowler. There may be others, but I think these would work. Sarastro1 (talk) 14:22, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
- Nice. I'll start then with the BBC image you linked. After you check it and make sure everything is fine we can use it as a base for any other illustrations you need. I'll be busy for the next couple of days though so there's going to be some delay with this. I hope that's okay. Cheers! -- Orionist ★ talk 01:22, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine, no rush. Sarastro1 (talk) 22:59, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Royal Standard plus Flag of Gwynedd
Article(s): List of British Flags, Royal Standard of the United Kingdom

Chess diagram fill
Article(s): template:chess diagram
Request: Create an SVG file of arrows on transplant blank(8 image). and 4 image of omega chess advanced piece fool on non transplant blank. also see Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop/Archive/May 2010#Finish {{chess diagram}} pieces SVG-ification.
Also I want SVG version of Amazon (Queen Knight compound) file (6 image. white on transplant blank, on light blank, on dark blank, black on transplant blank, on light blank, on dark blank).
I think now a = archbishop (knight + bishop compound) c = chancellor (knight + rook compound) so d= amazon would be better.220.74.36.60 (talk)

- Hello. I upload t = fool (for Omega Chess) and ten arrows. but some area d , l and u there are on arrows. --Chesshole (talk) 05:07, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Perhaps you would care to look at my proposals here? NikNaks talk - gallery 11:22, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with you. But we should renamed arrow file before Niknaks's request. may be we can use number for arrow file and frees L,U,R,D. foremore, now there are ten types of svg arrows chess file(upleft:ul,up:ua,upright:ur,left:la,leftright:lr,up-down:ud,right:ra,downleft:dl,down:da,downright:dr) also we needs two types more. upleft-downright, uprightt-downleft. We should rename codes of 12 types of arrow. -- Chesshole (contribs) 05:23, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Is there already a standardised notation for Omega and the other variations of chess? If so I will edit my page to accommodate them. Perhaps arrows could be represented by dashes and slashes? NikNaks talk - gallery 14:28, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- in one letter notation, It is no. I think Amazon/Maharaja notation should be M --Chesshole (talk) 23:50, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Article(s): Admiral (Royal Navy)
Request: Red, white and blue are different squadrons in the RN. Please reorg diagram into colored columns, one each for red, white blue. The arrows have to be moved for that. Thanks. --91.10.24.26 (talk) 07:06, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- One question: Is there any preferred order? I'd order the columns as blue -> white -> red (left to right) and keep rear admiral -> vice admiral -> admiral bootom to top as it is now. Therefore only the red an blue flag in the middle row need to be exchanged. Should there be applied an additional caption to the columns? I'd take the request this evening if nobody else wants to do it earlier. -- Patrick87 (talk) 10:21, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Geometric illustrations
Article(s): Catoptric tessellation
Request: The article is about a mathematical topic in geometry, namely a specific family of honeycombs. I intended for the table to contain a number of illustrations. However, I don't have a program to create images of 3-D models. I understand that this is a difficult request, especially for those who don't have a copy of the book this list is based on. The book is listed in Google Books here, but unfortunately a preview of the book is not available. I don't know if anybody can really help with this request at all without the book. The people at the Math reference desk might be more familiar with this stuff, but unfortunately there is no place over there to request the creation of mathematical images. :( -- Toshio Yamaguchi 14:06, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): There's really nothing we can do without any reference images. It might be worth asking at the maths desk to see if they have any pictures or sources that you can then pass on to us here. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:27, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Presidential Seal
Article(s): South Kasai
Request: We do not have the emblem of South Kasai (a Leopard above the letter "V") [1], [2], [3] and only a low-quality image of the presidential seal. Can you draw SVGs? The task is much easier than it looks. Many version of that emblem do exist, and in the more the official one of the emblem printed in the constitution, the leopard is very similar to the one from File:Coats of arms of Zaire 1971-1997.svg, while the modified letter "V" is about twice as bold as the one from the stamps.Antemister (talk) 18:04, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Proposed New Zealand flags
Article(s): List of New Zealand flags, Silver fern
Request: Create SVG files of all the proposed NZ flag designs found at http://www.nzflag.com/store.cfm
Graphist opinion(s): There is already vector data available for the NZFlag-Design from the PDF on the bottom of the page. -- Patrick87 (talk) 11:56, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- I have extracted the vector from that PDF and have uploaded it to Commons under PD-shape. It is trademarked but is free to use for non-commercial uses, as I have noted on the page. If someone knows of a better licensing template to use, please do change it. I'm unsure about whether they've trademarked the other ones, but I'll start vectorising them regardless. NikNaks talk - gallery 15:40, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Actually I think even this simple one is not PD-shape and certainly not the others listed on the page. "free to use for non-commercial uses" is NOT compatible with Commons licensing which explicitly requires free commercial use.
I think there could also be problems with most of the #Australian Flag Designs. Maybe you should give this some further thought before uploading many files with questionable license tag. -- Patrick87 (talk) 15:54, 5 April 2013 (UTC)- Hm, I see your point. If I re-upload it to Wikipedia would you be able to fill in the fair use tags? I really have no experience doing that. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:30, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- No, sorry, I'm from Germany where there is nothing like fair use. I'm always trying to copy-paste something myself when I have to upload non-free content to English Wikipedia. However I think even fair use isn't possible in this case since as far as I know you have to specify the article where the image is used and are not allowed to use it elsewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patrick87 (talk • contribs) 14:59, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

coat of arms for an apostolic protonotary
Article(s): Frederic Baraga, John Neumann, François de Laval, Harry Entwistle
Request: First could you make the coat of arms of Frederic Baraga ,[10]? This one might be tougher but could you make the coat of arms of St. John Neumann? His coat of arms look like this,[11], but color wise it gets tougher. In this video at 0:23, [12], it shows some of the colors like the red outside but not the inside but since it is the redemptionist logo it would be safe to assume the inside is the same colors as the redemptionist logo. Next is the coat of arms of Blessed François de Laval, [13]. Lastly can some change the galero and fiocchi on Harry Entwistle's coat of arms from black to the ones above. I would be appreciated if someone could make coat of arms and sorry for a long request. Spongie555 (talk) 04:45, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Request: Please create a version with a legend in English. It should read "Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch", preferably in a non-wacky font. Kaldari (talk) 07:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- It may be worth recreating this image as SVG since it is then easily translatable without any effort. I'm sure there's already a vector version of the South American continent around somewhere. I'll have a look this evening if nobody else wants to work on this. -- Patrick87 (talk) 08:00, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Well, actually I didn't notice this was already SVG this morning (must have still been sleeping ;) ). However there were huge amount of needles cruft in the file. I was able to losslessly reduce the size of the original file to less than a tenth (472 KB → 44 KB). I went even further and replaced the traced text with SVG text elements (only 18 KB left). Therefore the file is now translatable with minimum effort. I already translated it into English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. -- Patrick87 (talk) 23:44, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Done The English version can be found at Languages of South America (en).svg. -- Patrick87 (talk) 23:44, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Request: SVG version for this file... Perumalism Chat 10:39, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- The copyright claim on the raster file is very questionable. Where on the page it links to does it say that this is in the public domain?
- If it really is PD, then we can happily attempt to make our own vector of this, but if it's copyrighted or trademarked, we'll undoubtedly introduce inaccuracies. NikNaks talk - gallery 11:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- This could (and should) be licensed as
{{PD-textlogo}}
and{{trademarked}}
. At least as long as no OTRS message is available from "TMB Ltd.". I assume there's probably some PDF with vector data around that one could use. This shouldn't be hand-traced. -- Patrick87 (talk) 13:40, 11 April 2013 (UTC)- You mentioned on my talk page that you found a PDF source for the logo. Where is the link however? Did I overlook it? -- Patrick87 (talk) 18:13, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Request: It will be so helpful if svg image version is created because it was used in more tan 100 pages Thank you ... Perumalism Chat 10:57, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- I assume the characters around the circle and at the bottom are a script, so it would be very helpful to have those characters as text rather than having to hand-trace them.
- Also, the level of detail of this image is very low, so the detail on the yellow tower can't possibly be recreated, as we can't tell what it is. NikNaks talk - gallery 11:32, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Theres a much better verion (with English text) at Tamil Nadu Emblem.png that could be used as a source. I wasn't able to find an official vector version, though. Maybe you could ask the author of the English version if he has a vector file at hand. -- Patrick87 (talk) 23:47, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Swap labels for dx and dy
-
Approximating arc length using Pythagoras' Theorem
Article(s):
Arc length
Request:
The article declares standard usage by saying "We will call the horizontal element of this distance dx, and the vertical element dy." but in the image these labels are reversed. The dx and dy should be swapped in this image to avoid confusion. The image may be redundant for this particular article, in which case it could just be removed, but if other articles also link to it then it should be corrected.
