I was reading many comments about the 153 fish in John 21. I would like here for the first time to publish my own understanding and interpretation for the 153 fish. First of all we need to understand that there is nothing in the Bible that was mentioned for no reason. We must remember also that the change of water into wine was not a miracle but a sign. Jesus did not perform miracles, He gave us signs but since we are unable to explain how and what happened, we call these signs "miracles". Let us go to the text in John 21st. In verse 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. In Hebrew it says: 12 אָמַר לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ: "בּוֹאוּ, אִכְלוּ!" אַף אֶחָד מֵהַתַּלְמִידִים לֹא הֵעֵז לִשְׁאֹל אוֹתוֹ "מִי אַתָּה?", כִּי יָדְעוּ שֶׁהוּא הָאָדוֹן. If we ask ourselves why none of the disciples dared ask him who are you? We need to notice that only after they counted/knew the number of the fish they caught they did not dare any more to ask and they knew that he is the Lord or in other words that he is GOD. How did that happen? We need to understand the culture in order to understand the issue, and I am part of the culture! I know that Jesus did not speak Hebrew, modern Hebrew, but most probably he spoke Aramaic or Assyrian, and both languages are from the same origins. Let's take the modern Hebrew and accordingly that is correct for the Aramaic ( I asked people who are still using the old language and they assured me that the idea I mentioned is correct even with the old Aramaic). The idea is simply like this: If you ask a Jewish kid at school "which/what grade are you?" if he is in grade 5 he will not used the number 5, he will say it by using the Hebrew letter ה which is considered as 5, and grade 6 is the letter ו and grade 9 is the letter ט and so on. Since the disciples were Jews, and most probably they knew the Aramaic and the culture, and since after so many months with Jesus learning, watching and understanding his signs, and depending on the text None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. It is good to know here that the text says they knew it was the Lord and the reason they knew that is the sign Jesus gave them and that sign is the number of the fish they caught. Now I will try how they knew..... Knowing that it was the Lord means also that somehow he "told" them he is the Lord/God by giving them a sign that maybe only a person from the same culture would understand it. In this case the sign was 153.
