The Lorien Legacies Series

Main Books of the Lorien Legacies Series

I Am Number Four

This follows the story of John Smith, a 15-year old from the planet Lorien, and Henri, his Cêpan (protector), as they run from the Mogadorians, another alien race that is hunting John and eight other teenage Lorics residing on the planet Earth. These nine teens are members of the Garde, a group of Loric people gifted with special powers called "Legacies". Cêpans, who are also Loric, do not acquire legacies and most often become protectors and mentors for young members of the Garde. The teenagers are protected by a spell or charm that only allows them to be killed in numeric order which works only when they stay apart. The first three have been killed, and John is Number Four. After a mishap in Florida, John and Henri move to Paradise, Ohio. While here, John falls for Sarah Hart, makes enemies with Mark James (the conflict is later resolved), becomes best friends with Sam Goode and finds and keeps a dog which he named Bernie Kosar. Eventually, Sam finds out John's secret but keeps it and is supportive of him. Sarah also finds out about John when he saves her from a fire in Mark's house, leaping out a two story window and surviving. Near the end of the book, the Mogadorians find John and a battle happens at Paradise High School. Number Six finds John before the battle starts and she along with John, Sarah, Sam, Henri, Bernie Kosar (who turns out to be a Loric Chimaera who can turn into forms) and Mark fight against the Mogadorians. The Mogadorians lose the battle but Henri dies and Bernie Kosar gets badly hurt. Because the school is now destroyed and there are some dead bodies around town, the blame goes to John and Henri who are now suspected terrorists.John was forced to leave his girlfriend Sarah because of the danger. John, Sam, Six and Bernie Kosar (their dog) then go in search of the rest of the Garde so they can unite and defeat the Mogadorians before they take over Earth.[2]

The Power Of Six

The story is told by two members of the Garde: Number Four (John Smith), who is on the run with Sam, Six, and Bernie Kosar (aka Hadley, a Lorien Chimæra whom belonged to Four's grandfather), and Number Seven (Marina), who's hiding at Santa Teresa, a convent in Spain. While John, Number Six and Sam try to stay ahead of the Mogadorians while searching for the other surviving Loric, Number Seven searches for news of John after his heroic battle at the school that came at the end of I Am Number Four.

The story starts out showing what life is like for Marina, and also how John, Six, Sam, and Bernie Kosar struggle to evade police searching for them. Marina starts to suspect the Mogadorians have discovered her, but believes the charm is what keeps them from attacking here. She keeps seeing the same Mogadorian watching her in various circumstances. A new 7-year-old girl named Ella comes to the orphanage and Marina befriends her.

Elsewhere, John, Six, BK, and Sam escape police and are hiding again. John finally decides to open his Chest and he and the others examine its contents. John and Six are unfamiliar with almost all of the Chest's contents. When they open the Chest, it somehow notifies the Mogadorians of their location. Later that night, they attack the house. Six, John, Sam and BK all manage to make it out. Later John reads Henri's letter and finds out the Mogadorians have captured Sam's father. Sam remembers his father telling him of a secret Loric base in his backyard. They set off to find it. Meanwhile, Marina tries to convince her Cepan Adelina to open the Chest for her and take responsibility of her role to Marina with no avail. Ella finds the hidden Chest and while Marina and Ella go to retrieve it, three girls from the convent confront Marina. Marina fights them but Ella ends up breaking her arm. Marina discovers her healing legacy when she repairs Ella's arm. Later, Marina drugs Adelina and opens her Chest.

Elsewhere, Six, John, Sam and BK make it to Sam's house, where they unlock the well and discover his father's information base. The Mogadorians arrive and Six and BK are left fighting them while John and Sam find Sarah. The FBI appears and arrests John, putting him and Sam in a prison near Washington DC. They originally suspect Sarah, however in book 3 her name is cleared. Also, Marina activates a communication device in her Chest and since the Mogadorians have hacked Six's, they now know where she is. Six, John, Sam and BK are looking at John's solar system model when they see the Marina's tracking device and hear her voice before the connection is dropped. In the prison, John is questioned and soon the Mogadorians arrive. Six is there and helps them escape, though very angry they left her during the battle at Sam's. The Mogadorians have stolen John's Chest. John, Six, and Sam all make it out of the prison without being attacked by the Mogadorians and form a plan. Six is going to Spain to help Marina, who she now understands is a member of the Garde, and Sam and BK and John are going to the Mogadorian's base in a hollowed out mountain near West Virginia.

Meanwhile, the Mogadorians catch up with Marina and Adelina as they try to escape. Adelina is murdered while trying to help Marina. The Mogadorian Marina has seen previously saves her life and explains he is not a Mogadorian but a Cepan of the tenth member of the Garde, who is Ella. He explains Ella took the second ship when the last elder, Loridas, sacrificed himself. The Cepan, named Crayton, Ella, who is actually eleven and can go between ages, using Loridas' aternus ability, Hector, a friend of Marina, and Marina try to escape to the lake where Crayton has a Loric Chimaera waiting to help them. Six arrives on the scene and helps Crayton, Ella, Marina and Hector fight. Hector is killed by a Mogadorian beast. They win the battle. Six makes plans with the others to find the other Garde and the rest of the Chimaeras with Marina, Crayton and Ella. Crayton says "This isn't the end. You are getting way too strong, winning too many battles for them to let up now. The ruler, Setrukus Ra, will be here soon."

Elsewhere, Sam and John use Xitheris, a Loric stone that transfers Six's legacies to them temporarily to sneak into the mountain and grab John's Chest, and another that was there. They run out of invisibility and soon the Mogadorians are fighting them. They open the prisons in the mountain base and free Nine, who helps them fight their way out, using the other Chest, which is his, to their aid. Sam gets caught and they escape without him, discovering he is captured too late. John is too injured to go back for him. Nine attempts to go back in with John, but John is wounded by the force field around the mountain. Setrakus Ra arrives and Nine is about to attack him when Ra hides in the base, Nine and BK unable to reach him. Nine and John and BK head north, with nowhere to go since the address for meeting Six was lost in Sam's pocket.

Lorics have special powers that vary with age, number and power called Legacies. John Smith's first Legacy was Lumen, which made his palms glow like a flashlight when he was in school in Ohio. A Legacy that comes with Lumen is being able to be resistant to fire and to be able to control fire. Six, in "The Power of Six," which was the second book, has the ability to control, or have influence over, the weather and climatic changes. She has also the power to become invisible. We know that Marina of the Seas could breathe under water; which is fitting, considering her name. She also has the ability to heal with her palms. There are also other Legacies like being able to talk to animals -which both Four and Nine have- the ability to see in the dark -which Marina has- and others that have not been mentioned. Nine who was found close to the end of the book has antigravity which makes him able to walk on walls. He also has the power to transfer his Legacies to humans and like Four has the ability to talk to animals which came in handy when Nine escapes with BK. [3]

The Rise Of Nine

The Rise of Nine is told from the first-person perspectives of Number Four (John Smith), Number Six (Maren Elizabeth), and Number Seven (Marina of the Sea). The story follows the characters as they continue attempting to evade their destruction.

Throughout the third installment of the Lorien Legacies, the current known members of the Garde are shown to be scattered around the world and placed in various locations. The current known members being Four, Six, Seven, Nine, and Ten, they all venture out trying to obtain certain clearance based on each of their missions.

The Power of Six ended with Sam being held captive within the Mogadorian base in West Virginia and John and Nine having no way to get to him. After that, they travelled around the place trying to sort out how to get Sam out of the cave. This, however, was only Four's intentions. He was constantly thinking and worrying about Sam and Sarah's well-being, his human friends who are already at the hands of the Mogadorians. The longer Four spent with Nine, the more he realised that he and Nine are completely opposite people. Four has a soft-spot when it comes to his friends and the rest of the Garde, and constantly wanting to prevent injuries and wasted time. Nine, however, has a knack for running into things quickly without thinking them through. He has an arrogant nature but also a bit of big-brotherly love, which is what Four uncovers later on in the book, even after they have a fight on top of the John Hancock Center.

Meanwhile, Six, Seven, Ten, and Crayton flew on a plane at the beginning of the book, their destination being India, where rumors had spread about a resurrected god living in the Himalayas. Once they arrived in New Delhi, they were surrounded by armored vehicles with the number 8 painted on it. After agreeing to go with the unknown army, the four Loric were taken near the Himalayan mountains, but ended up being pursued and shot at by a group of elite people known as the Lord's Resistance. This group was sponsored by various wealthy and well-connected benefactors with guns, helicopters, and various armors that allowed them to attempt to kill the "resurrected god". During the first battle against the group, Marina's chest was open. In America, Four and Nine use the tablet that Four obtained in The Power of Six in Sam's dad's well and discover it shows all of the Garde's positions.

After a lengthy battle in the mountains against the Lord's Resistance, the four Loric were taken to the "resurrected god" by Commander Sharma where they were each tested to see if they were worthy to meet the god, which was later revealed to actually be Number Eight, a member of the Garde that had been hiding in the mountains for years. After obtaining his chest thanks to Marina, Eight took the others, excluding the Commander, to an underground cave that acted as a teleporter, which is one of Eight's Legacies. The Mogadorians arrived, Crayton was killed and the remaining four were forced to leave by teleporting. Six was teleported to New Mexico while the other three appeared just off the coast of Somalia.

Meanwhile, after their fight atop the John Hancock Center, Four and Nine ended up agreeing to go to New Mexico, based on them sharing the same vision while they were asleep; the vision was both of them fighting together against Setrákus Ra they fell from a few black tunnels where they heard a voice whispering New Mexico.

Six was teleported to New Mexico where she ended up in a desert. She walked for a while and ended up by an American military base. She was on the verge of death when her and Ella – aka number ten – talked telepathically. After Six was convinced it was a mirage, helicopters flew around her and rescued her. They made her talk by drugging her. She was thrown in a cell with Sarah. After six talked with Sarah for a bit, Sarah ended up being Setrákus Ra. Setrákus Ra is able to change his form. She tried to defeat Ra but failed. Six is injured and thrown into a cell with the real Sarah. Sarah has been beaten so she would talk about what she knew about John. She said she had Sam thrown in her cell for a short time but that's it.

Meanwhile, Marina, Eight and Ella teleported to Stonehenge, where they were confronted by guards. Ella distracted the guards by reducing her age until she was six years old, which is one of her Legacies. After getting rid of the guards they where successfully teleported to New Mexico by Eight, where they traveled towards the mountains that Six mentioned telepathically to Ella earlier on.

Six was held captive within the Mogadorian base in New Mexico. She was offered to fight Ra and accepted. After a short battle, Six was defeated by Setrakus Ra after he disabled her Legacies. He then paralysed her, covered her in granite, and suspended her from the ceiling of the cavern. In the meantime, the other five known Garde members (John, Marina, Eight, Nine, and Ella) met up and entered the Mogadorian base. John found Sarah held captive within the base and took her with them into the cavern where Six was trapped. During an ensuing battle, Six was rescued, as Four obtained a new Legacy of healing, Eight was almost killed and every Mogadorian including Setrakus Ra disappeared. The book ends with every Garde member being together escaping the base, excluding Number Five, and Six vowing that Setrakus Ra will not get away from them the next time.

The book was published in the United States on August 21, 2012, by HarperCollins and in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2012, through Penguin Books.[4]

The Fall of Five

The Fall of Five, the 4th book of The Lorien Legacies, is scheduled to be published on August 27, 2013.

The Garde are finally reunited, but do they have what it takes to win the war against the Mogadorians?

John Smith —Number Four— thought that things would change once the Garde found each other. They would stop running. They would fight the Mogadorians. And they would win.

But he was wrong. After facing off with the Mogadorian ruler and almost being annihilated, the Garde know they are drastically unprepared and hopelessly outgunned. Now they’re hiding out in Nine’s Chicago penthouse, trying to figure out their next move.

The six of them are powerful, but they’re not strong enough yet to take on an entire army—even with the return of an old ally. To defeat their enemy, the Garde must master their Legacies and learn to work together as a team. More importantly, they’ll have to discover the truth about the Elders and their plan for the Loric survivors.

And when the Garde receive a sign from Number Five—a crop circle in the shape of a Loric symbol—they know they are so close to being reunited. But could it be a trap? Time is running out, and the only thing they know for certain is that they have to get to Five before it’s too late.

The Garde may have lost battles, but they will not lose this war.

Lorien will rise again.

The Lost Files: Supplemental Books

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Six’s Legacy

This supplement details the history behind Number Six, showing where she had been living and how she developed her legacies.

The story begins as Six and her Cêpan, Katarina, are heading for Mexico to start a brand-new life. Before Mexico they lived in Denver, where Six went by the name Sheila. Before Denver it was Nova Scotia. They lived in Denver until Six said something to blow their cover and set the Mogadorians on their trail. They begin a new life in Puerto Blanco as a strange white family.

Six trains with Katarina so that she can control her legacies and learn to fight in combat. Katarina uses the internet to monitor what is happening in the world. One day they learn of a bus bombing in London and a web-blog that reads: "Nine, now eight. Are the rest of you out there?" Six and Katarina are the first to respond, just before Six gets her second mark, signifying that Number Two is dead. They leave immediately.

Six and Katarina cross the U.S. border and stay at a hotel in Texas. A Mogadorian shows up and tries to kill Six but thanks to the Lorien charm, the attack rebounds and kills him. They try to escape but another Mogadorian attacks. The Six and Katarina are saved by a couple of men, who hold the Mog at gun point.

Six buries her Chest in the Lake Ouachita State Park in Arkansas and they spend the night there. Later on, they arrive in upstate New York. While watching a romantic movie with Katarina, Six learns that she had a husband on Lorien and also had many other love interests before the Mogadorian invasion. Six thinks about herself falling in love and comes to the conclusion that she will never love anyone who isn't at war against the Mogadorians, even if they don't know about it.

After playing a game of soccer with some other girls, Six returns to the hotel, only to find the Mogadorians waiting for her. Six and Katarina are captured and brought to a secret cave base in West Virginia. Six promises Katarina not to reveal her number and is forced to watch the Mogadorians torture Katarina to death. A long while passes by and Six discovers that she has the power to turn invisible. She uses this power to escape and kill the Mogadorian who was responsible for killing Katarina.

Over the next few years Six goes off on her own. Learning how to control her legacies and how to fight. While in Athens, Georgia, Six sees a video of Number Four leaping out of a burning house and knows he is one of the Garde. She finds a bus station for a ride to Paradise, Ohio, sparking the final events of I Am Number Four.

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Nine's Legacy

When John frees Number Nine from his cell in The Power of Six, he’s ferocious, reckless, and ready to fight back. But being held captive changes a person — even a Loric. See what Nine was like before his capture, and read about his dramatic escape from his point of view.

In I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Nine’s Legacy, discover the story behind Nine. He was living in a tower in urban Chicago until on day he was stalked by a mog. A couple of years before meeting John Smith, a.k.a. Number Four and before being held prisoner, Nine was hunting down Mogadorians in Chicago with his Cêpan, Sandor. What happened there would change Nine forever…

The story begins as Number Nine, aka Stanley Worthington, tricks a Mogadorian into entering an elevator of the John Hancock Center with him and uses the defense systems to kill him. Sandor, Nine's Cêpan, becomes upset and has Nine clean up the Mog's ashes. Later on, Nine and Sandor discuss the incident. It is revealed that Nine and Sandor have been living in Chicago for over five years and have set up shop in a two-floor penthouse at the John Hancock Center building. Nine trains with Sandor's robotic machines and lives pretty much isolated from the world. Before all of this, they were on the road a lot. Living in hotels and eating off of fast-food restaurants. Then Sandor believed they should start hiding in plain sight, which brought them to Chicago.

Sandor decides on having Nine going to a sprawling rec center called the Windy City Hall, in order for him to interact with others. While there, Nine sees a girl who becomes interested in him, which causes him to lose focus while climbing the climbing wall. When he looks for her, she's gone.

Nine talks about her to Sandor, who convinces him to return to the rec center the next day. When he returns, he finds that the girl isn't there but he is able to improve on his climbing skills. But at the end of the day he finds her outside the rec center and learns that her name is Maddy. Nine is given her number before she leaves. Nine fears getting too close and believes he is making a mistake with this girl. Sandor convinces him to call her, reminding him that even though he can't escape who he is, he can still try to be somebody else. Nine, convinced of his Cêpan's words, calls her and they begin a relationship.

Nine and Maddy go on their first date together. They go to the planetarium, where Nine learns that Maddy is living home alone, while her parents are out of town on business. Later on, Nine tries to hold Maddy's hand, but she pulls back. After Nine walks her home, Sandor starts making fun of Nine about his time with Maddy. Nine later gets a text from her, telling him to pick the place next time.

The second date came, and Sandor allowed Nine to drive one of his fancy cars. Things went well at first, they went bad not long after. When he picked up Maddy, he accidentally rammed a van in front of them full of Mogadorians. A highway speed chase occurs but Nine is able to lose them. Maddy stormed out of the car after Nine kissed her, and left. To make matters worse, Sandor had been monitoring the whole thing and was now planning to leave the city. Nine storms out of the JHC building out of anger. While alone, Nine receives a text from Maddy, who wants to see him.

Nine goes to see Maddy and is seemingly forgiven. He spends the night with her and doesn't leave. In the morning, he is surrounded by Mogadorians and is captured when Maddy uses a Taser on him. It is revealed that Maddy has been working for the Mogadorians against her will. It is revealed that the Mogadorians are holding Maddy's parents captive, because her father "saw something he wasn't supposed to see". They struck a deal that if she brought them what they wanted they would let her see her parents again. When Nine asks Maddy why she betrayed him and if she ever liked him, she replies that she had to do what she needed to do but she did indeed have feelings for him. Nine finally comes to forgive her and also doesn't blame her for any of it.

Nine and Maddy are taken to a hidden base in a cave of West Virginia. While Maddy is reunited with her parents, a Mog tells Nine that even though they said they would allow her to see her parents, they did not say anything about letting them live. Nine is forced to watch as Maddy and her parents are killed by a piken, to which he vomits and looks away. Later on, Sandor is captured and Nine is forced to watch as they torture him. Nine is able to break free of his bounds and kills Sandor to spare him a slow, painful death.

Almost a year passes while Nine is held captive by the Mogadorians. Just as the events of The Power of Six come into play, Nine is rescued by Number Four and Sam Goode. When they escape from the cave, Sam is left behind and Setrákus Ra shows up in his ship at the entrance of the cave. Nine and Four charge at him but are stopped by a blue force field, and Four is wounded upon impact.

The story ends as Four, Nine, and a Chimæra named Bernie Kosar drive up north towards Chicago, with Nine swearing to kill all Mogadorians, including the leader, Setrákus Ra as revenge for the deaths of Maddy and Sandor.

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: The Fallen Legacies

The story begins with the introduction of Adamus Sutekh (aka Adam), son of Andrakkus Sutekh (aka the General), and Ivanick Shu-Ra (aka Ivan), son of Bolog Shu-Ra, as they do their homework and are called back to their home in Ashwood, Washington D.C. The General reveals that they are to come with him to find the Loric Garde, Number One. They travel to Malaysia and witness the death of One and her Cepan. They return home as One's body is brought along, but leave her Cepan to rot in Malaysia. Adamus is chosen for a special experiment and used to infiltrate the mind of One. Once inside Adam starts to relive the memories to gain personal knowledge of the other hidden Loric children but runs into the ghost of One. Because he was plugged into her mind, her subconscious is now part of his, to which he dreads of. A lottttttttttttttt...

Adamus learns more about One and discovers that the beliefs of his people are wrong once he saw the aftermath of Lorien's destruction. He also learns that One tried to impress a guy named Wade by shoplifting and was caught by the police. Hilde, One's Cepan, was forced to move them to Malaysia and start over. Again he watched the death of One and came to realize how wrong it was. Adam started to relive the memories again and even relived the ones on the California beach, rewinding the parts when One comes out of the water, to which One doesn't seem to be embarrassed or disturbed by.

Adam is able to wake up back in his bed and finds out that he has been in a coma for over three years. He is immediately pulled back into service as Ivanick and he are sent to London to find Number Two. Once there, Adamus discovers that One is still haunting him and she tries to convince him that he needs to save the Garde. Adam discovers Two's location by tracking a website and deletes it; he traces it to the source and goes off to find her. Once he finds Two, he tries to convince her that he's here to help and that they needed to move fast. Ivanick arrives and kills her first, believing that Adam didn't have the guts to do it. Adamus goes home sad about his failure to help her.

Over the next few years Adam grows more distant from his family and his kind. He comes to see them as evil monsters who want to destroy everything in the universe. Number Three is found in Kenya and Adam is once again teamed up with Ivanick to track him. They spend a few weeks in Kenya and discover that Three is kid named Hannu. Ivanick and a gang of Mogadorians plan to attack in the middle of the night, which promotes Adamus to try and warn Three. However, he is stopped by Ivanick, who believes that he is trying to claim the glory of the kill first, and he tries to convince Ivanick to turn away from the Mogadorians. Adamus fails as he is forced to fight Ivanick. Using the skills he remembered from the memories of One, Adamus is able to defeat Ivanick and chase after Three. Adamus watches from a distance as Three is killed by the General on the other side of a ravine. Unknown to Adam, Ivanick has awaken from the fight and pushes him over the edge of the ravine, falling to the rushing water and rocks below.

Adamus finds himself in California, under the sun with One right by him. One desperately tries to convince him to awaken from his unconsciousness-state and survive the ravine. Adamus's fate is left unknown as the story ends with a cliffhanger.

Number One's ghost still continues to visit Adam and the two grow closer to each other. One tries to convince Adam is find the remaining Garde and join them, but Adam refuses believing himself to be weak and useless. Later on, Adam tries to find out more information about his family's whereabouts but comes up with nothing. He later starts to realize that One has been disappearing more than usual.

One later reveals that her ghostly image is fading away and that soon she may disappear for good. Fearing for One's well-being Adamus gets help from a friend of his and is able to make it back to Ashwood. Only his mother greets him with love, while his father treats him like a hostile. It is revealed that the General and Ivanick covered up Adamus's betrayal and made it look like he was killed by Number Three. Adamus makes a deal with him that he will give him a week to prove his usefulness or he will be killed. Adam finds life back in Ashwood hard as everyone sees him as a failure. His own sister, Kelly, knows the truth about his betrayal and doesn't see or talk to him anymore.

While working as a Surveyor, Adamus meets Dr. Zarkos, Dr. Anu's replacement, who has improved the mid transfer technology. During dinner with his mother and father, Adam manages to trick the General to put him back into the project as a lab rat. In Dr. Zarkos's lab, Adamus meets Malcolm Goode, father of Sam Goode, who is the only survivor of Dr. Zarkos's experiments. During the first experiment, Adam experiences the memory of when Hilde, One's Cepan, died and feels One's emotions for the first time. But the experiment is cut short and Adam is unsuccessful in trying to save One. Dr. Zarkos expresses that he thinks if he could kill Adamus while under the experiment he may be able to get the memories, but would need the approval of the General first.

Meanwhile, One starts to get worse by the minute. She starts to disappear more often than the other times before. Adamus finds information on some humans who may know where the Garde is, but deletes the information. The General finds out and plans to have him killed, Dr. Zarkos uses the opportunity to ask the General for permission to use him on the experiment. Adam awaits execution and is visited by his mother who found out about his betrayal from the General. When she asks him if it was true he replies with "yes" and she walks away without another word, which infuriates Adam.

Adamus is able to kill Dr. Zarkos before he can perform the experiment and releases Malcolm. Adamus performs the experiment on himself and is somehow able to survive it. He meets up with One in his dream-like state and talks with her. One reveals that there was no way to save her and that she needed him to see the real side of his family in order for him to fully side with the Garde. One then transfers her powers into Adam so that he didn't have to feel weak or useless. Adamus professes his love for One and they share a kiss, just before One disappears forever.

Adamus awakens in the woods with Malcolm, who is trying to remember his life before. He tells Adam that they were able to escape Ashwood with the help of an earthquake. Adam admits that he was responsible for that and reveals he is a Mogadorian, which Malcolm jokes about and accepts at the same time. The two travel back to Paradise, Ohio so that Malcolm can find his son, Sam. Along the way, Malcolm helps Adam train and becomes a mentor to him. When they arrive in Paradise they find the aftermath of a battle from the events of The Power of Six and discover that Sam has joined the Garde. Malcolm tries to reconcile with his wife but is kicked out of the house. Adam and him journey down to a hidden cave, just below the garden and spend the night there. Adamus calculates that Sam is mostly probably being held at a secret government base in New Mexico, something he heard about back in Ashwood. Both Adam and Malcolm immediately drive for New Mexico. They arrive at the secret base, just in time as the final events of The Rise of Nine are taking place. They break in and find Sam imprisoned in a cage with the help of a soldier. Ivanick shows up with a Mogadorian army and Adamus uses his gift to help Malcolm and Sam escape, but he remains behind to fight off Ivanick. Adamus is able to kill Ivanick and the Mogadorians by causing the armoury to explode with the help of his earthquake ability, but is wounded in the process.

Adamus concludes that he will survive the battle and meet up with his newfound allies, the Garde.

I Am Number Four: Eight's Origin

I Am Number Four: Eight's Origin is a short story which is only able to be read on the Lorien Legacies website and ebook. It was put on the series website as part of the countdown to The Rise Of Nine on August 13, 2012. It is described as "An exclusive sneak peek into Number Eight’s past".[5]

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: The Last Days of Lorien

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: The Last Days of Lorien was released on April 9, 2013. Harpercollins describes it as a "stunning prequel novella to the New York Times bestselling I Am Number Four series" .[6] It is set on Lorien before it was attacked by the Mogadorians, and is told from the perspective of Sandor (Nine's Cêpan) .

There is only one place that Sandor fits in, a dancing club called The Chimaera. Despite being too young to enter the club, Sandor was able to fool security by using his engineering skills to change the age on his ID band. While having fun, Sandor spots one of his teachers from school, Endym, and tries to escape out the back door. Sandor bursts into a dressing room and meets a famous Garde named Devektra, who is known for her dancing and manipulation of sound and light waves. They chat for a while and he gets to listen to her sing on stage from the balcony. When Devektra leaves suddenly, Sandor tries to go after her but is caught by Endym, who reports him to the school council.

Sandor's parents video conference into the meeting with Sandor's principal. Sandor is expelled and given two options for his future. He could be a Munis apprentice (city maintenance) hauling garbage for the rest of his life or working in a Kabarak (farm) for a few years weeding and digging. His father decides he will go to a Karbarak. When preparing to leave, Sandor is approached by Brandon a Mentor Cêpan, who offers him a place at the Lorien Defense Academy doing engineering. Deciding it was better than farming, Sandor accepts the offer. While at the LDA, Sandor becomes friends with Rapp the other engineering student and warms up to the academy.

Those who live at the academy believe in an ancient prophecy, made by the original Nine Elders, that Lorien will be attacked and destroyed by an unknown enemy when they least expect it. While the rest of Lorien believes it to be a myth, many at the academy believe it to be true. the Elders are the highest authority in all of Lorien and protect it from hostile forces. Pitticus Lore, the most powerful Elder, is considered to be the most mysterious but well-known Elder of the nine.

While on grid maintenance (which protects the city from aerial attack) in the city with Rapp, Sandor meets Devektra again, who invites him to hear her sing at the Chimaera for the Quartermoon celebration. Sandor and Rapp notice the grid is in very bad repair and there is a weird light in the sky dismissed by Sandor as a Quartermoon decoration. While still in the city, Sandor meets a Cêpan named Daxin who borrows the vehicle Sandor and Rapp are using, with Sandor going to drive. Sandor and Rapp are the only ones programmed to be able to use this vehicle so Sandor goes with Daxin. During the trip, Sandor learns that the Elders have been out of reach for a few days, the grid was failing all over the city, and the bright light may not be a Quartermoon decoration. This worries Sandor. Daxin meets his Garde and gives him a large identity band to match his own and syncs them together.

On the Quartermoon, Sandor sneaks out and goes to the Chimaera by stealing Daxin's ID band. Sandor is summoned by Devektra and goes to her dressing room. Devektra expresses that she senses something is going to go wrong and that she worries for the dark night ahead of them. Sandor communicates with her through telepathy and learns that she likes him because he is like her, somebody who doesn't fit. Sandor and Devektra kiss. When Sandor opens his eyes, Devektra has left.

Sandor watches from the balcony as Devektra sings to the crowd a simple sad song without her usual fancy display. His ID band vibrates and says alert which he ignores. The song is for Lorien. When she finishes the song, the roof of the building collapses on the crowd. When reaching the outside, Sandor realizes that the planet is under attack. Before going back to the academy, Sandor meets Devektra again. Sandor and Devektra hug. She explains that she knows they will never see each other again and plans on going to meet up with some Garde friends to battle the invaders. They both say goodbye and depart.

Arriving at the academy, Sandor finds the place destroyed and everyone dead. Brandon arrives and takes a shocked Sandor with him. Brandon explains that an alien race known as the Mogadoriens have invaded their planet. All the Elders, except for Loridas and Pittacus Lore (who is missing), are dead. Arriving at the space station, where there are eight chosen Garde being evacuated off planet, Brandon tells Sandor that he can't come and that it is all about saving their entire race now. Daxin was supposed to be there with his Garde to make up nine Garde and Mentors. Sandor is overcome with remorse for Daxin's Garde who was supposed to live.

Taking a chance, Sandor uses Brandon's vehicle to go get the young Garde who is to become number Nine. Nine's grandpa tells Sandor that Nine will be very important and that he will be important also but that he will die. After leaving, Sandor and Nine are attacked by a Mogadorien but are saved by an unseen Devektra who has found them. When they arrive at the space station, Sandor hands over Nine to Brandon. Sandor watches as Nine takes part in a ceremony the Elder Loridas is performing. Then he turns away to join the perimeter guard. Brandon stops him and tells him that he must go with them because Nine needs a Cêpan and the bond between them has taken place.

After waiting to see if any survived the attack the captain takes them to Earth. We skip ahead a month into the year long journey to Earth. Sandor talks with Hessu who explains to him the Loric charm which makes the Loric children only able to be killed in order of their number. Hessu is very bitter and cynical expecting all of them to die. Sandor thinks that Earth can't be as bad as Hessu thinks. He goes to have his One on One session with Nine where he agrees to play with Nine.

Critical reception

Reception to the series has been mostly positive.[7][8][9] The first two books in the series have both achieved New York Times Bestseller status, with I Am Number Four spending seven weeks in the Children's Section at #1.[10]

Film adaptation

In 2009 DreamWorks Pictures bought the rights to I Am Number Four and released the movie on February 18, 2011. The movie was the first DreamWorks film to be distributed by Disney's Touchstone Pictures and received generally negative reviews from critics, with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes giving a score of 32% based on 156 reviews.[11] The movie had a world-wide gross of $145,982,798 and a budget of $50 million, but still fell short of expectations.[12]

Plans for any future installments for the series have been shelved.[13] Director D. J. Caruso confirmed that he would like to direct a sequel, but in an interview with MTV Hollywood Crush Lore has stated that any questions or requests for a sequel should be directed to producer Michael Bay.[14][15]
