Anthony Armstrong Emery is a British real estate entrepreneur based in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.[1] He is the founder and CEO of EcoHouse Group, a multinational real estate company specialising in the construction of social housing under the Brazilian government's Minha Casa, Minha Vida programme.[2]
In 2012, Armstrong Emery became the first foreign President of a Brazilian football club by taking charge of Alecrim FC.[3]
Early life
Growing up in London, Anthony Armstrong Emery learnt to speak a number of languages at a young age.[1] He would travel to Brazil frequently with his grandfather, who was director of a company that controlled telecommunications in the country.[1]
Armstrong Emery graduated in Law from the University of Nottingham and obtained a master's degree in Fiscal Law from the University of Salamanca, but claims never to have had any interest in entering the legal profession.[1] After completing his master's degree in Spain, he briefly moved to Paraguay due to his 'childish curiosity' brought about from reading spy novels.[3]
Business career
After many years working in the tourism industry in the South of Brazil,[1] Anthony Armstrong Emery returned to Spain where he sold real estate to expats before the start of the property boom.[3]
In 2004, Armstrong Emery left Spain and started land banking in Brazil, and in 2009, after the launch of Minha Casa, Minha Vida, he created EcoHouse Group.[3]
EcoHouse Group
EcoHouse Group is based in Natal and has offices in London, Singapore, Dubai, Sao Paulo and Toronto.[2] It has over 1000 employees and is currently the only UK company authorised to build developments under Minha Casa, Minha Vida.[2]
In November 2013, legal action is being taken by investors in Singapore against the company for failing to return investment money on time. [4]
MAIS RN
In April 2013, Armstrong Emery was invited by the state secretary of development to participate in MAIS RN,[5] a partnership between the Rio Grande do Norte state government and the private sector, which will conduct a full evaluation of the economy, production techniques and infrastructure needs of Rio Grande do Norte.[6]
Sport
Alecrim FC
In 2012, Anthony Armstrong Emery became the owner of Alecrim FC, a football club based in Natal, with refrigeration entrepreneur Washington Fernandes becoming Vice President.[7] His tenure has been most notable for the signing of Stefano Seedorf, cousin of former-Dutch international Clarence Seedorf.[8]
In partnership with local authorities, EcoHouse is constructing a new stadium for Alecrim which will hold 10,500, with the potential to increase the capacity to 25,000.[9] When the stadium is completed at the end of 2013, it will also hold a football academy.[9]
Alecrim FC Rugby
Armstrong Emery also owns Alecrim FC Rugby, which reached the final of the 2012 Brazilian Cup.[10]
A.C. Monza Brianza 1912
In April 2013, it was announced that Armstrong Emery had purchased Italian Lega Pro football club A.C. Monza Brianza.[9][11][12]
Armstrong Emery states that among his aims for Monza are for the club to gain promotion to Serie B within two years and to become an international brand.[13] [14] He was quoted in FourFourTwo as saying: "Monza is not just football - it's Formula One, it's fashion, it's Milan, it's Italy."[15]
