Sarah Elizabeth Jones (September 22, 1986 – February 20, 2014[1]) was an American camera assistant. She was working on the film Midnight Rider when she was struck and killed by a train on set in rural Georgia.[1]
Sarah Elizabeth Jones was a child of Richard and Elizabeth Jones. She was the sister of Rebecca Jones and Eric Jones. Jones began her film career while interning on the set of Army Wives (2007), a popular television show. She continued to climb the ranks of the film industry, quickly finding a passion in the art of Cinematography. Jones was a loyal and respected member of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600).[2]
Following her death, the crews of several TV shows gave tribute to Jones by posting her name on their slates. One of Jones' responsibilities on set as a camera assistant was to operate the slate. The crews that honored her included those of Glee and The Vampire Diaries.[3] This movement was to have Jones noted in the "In Memoriam" segment of the 86th Academy Awards ceremony, scheduled for March 2, 2014.[4][5] On February 25 an online petition was launched. The goal was to get 10,000 signatures within 12 hours on Tuesday, receiving 17,000 signatures on day 1. The petition drew 62,000 signatures and was submitted to the Academy on Friday February 28.[1][5][6] Although not included in the official "In Memoriam" segment, Jones' picture and name were included in the telecast, prompting viewers to the Academy website to view further tributes that were also not included.[1]
