Marcos Paulo "Rony" Mesquita Lopes (born 28 December 1995) is a Portuguese footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Ligue 1 club Lille LOSC on loan from Premier League club Manchester City.

Early life

Born in Brazil, Lopes moved to Portugal at the age of four.[1]

Career

Lopes played youth football in Portugal for Benfica, before signing for Manchester City in 2011.[2] After signing for City from Benfica in 2011, Lopes first came to attention a year later when he was a surprising addition to City's pre-season tour squad, and more impressively got game time in six out of City's seven friendly fixtures. Although he was not promoted immediately to the first team when competitive fixtures started in August, Lopes had only another few months to wait for his debut when he was included in the substitutes for City's FA Cup third round tie against Watford. Brought on in the 88th minute for David Silva, he made an instant impact, taking only two minutes to score City's third and final goal in a 3–0 victory. This made Lopes the youngest ever goalscorer for the Manchester City first team in a competitive match at the age of 17 years and 9 days.[3] He was a regular for City Elite Development Squad in 2012-13 and went on to claim the inaugural Academy Player of the Year award for the season, winning a public vote.[4] He is now the Captain of the EDS for the 2013-14 season.

He was included in the team that featured in the first match of UEFA Youth League. He scored two goals in the match up to give City a 4-1 win over FC Viktoria Plzeň away, and scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 home victory over youth team of FC Bayern Munich in the second fixture of the UEFA Youth League. On 21 January 2014 he started against West Ham United in the second leg on the semi-final of the League Cup. In the game, he assisted Sergio Agüero and Álvaro Negredo to a goal each, winning 3-0 on the night, and 9-0 on aggregate. He was awarded Capital One man of the match. Then on 25 January he started against Watford in the FA Cup.

Manchester City

Lopes officially promoted to first-team squad in 2013-14 campaign. Named as substitute in several Premier League matches, include on February 3rd home defeat to Chelsea.[5]

Lille

On 26 June 2014, Lopes was loaned to Lille until the end of 2014-15 season.
