Welcomes

Hi, I'm not sure how to use this process exactly, but here goes. I first played an Infocom game many years ago on my Atari 800, Zork 1 and fell in love with the gendre. I subsequently bought and played almost all the titles and spent many hours of enjoyment solving puzzles and finding solution while lost in the various worlds created. I still have most of the original packaging for Atari for most of the games! A few years ago I noticed the Lost treasures of Infocom for Windows volumes 1 and 2. I bought both intending to save them for when the time seemed right to re experience the enjoyment from before. Well, the time seemed right a couple of weeks ago and with great anticipation I started to load disk 1 Zork 1. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that Windows XP would not play them or load them. I have spent the last 2 weeks searching for help. I even contacted Activision but believe they have all been devoured by Grues...which confirms my suspicions that they were always totally in the dark about the infocom concept and how to respect and market it!...they never replied. I understand there may be interpretors for XP available but where to find them and how to use them...any help would be appreciated, if you could point me in the right direction. thanks a million....rgds John..holding his trusty lantern and rusty sword!!

There is a lively community of fans who still create new works of IF (interactive fiction). Two interpreters that can run the classic Infocom games are Frotz and Nitfol. The articles for each should point you in the right direction for download links and such. The IF article in particular has several links to sites full of useful stuff, such as the IF Archive. Enjoy! -DynSkeet (talk) 14:04, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

I was able to get The Lost Treasures of Infocom working under Windows/XP as follows:

For Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP:

   * Create or edit the CONFIG.NT file. (Usually found in the WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.)
   * Add the following line to the file:
         DEVICE=%systemroot%\system32\ANSI.SYS
   * Save CONFIG.NT with the new line.
   * Check that a copy of ANSI.SYS exists in the specified path location.
   * Restart the computer to complete the change.

Welcome!

Hello, DynSkeet/archive1, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
Happy editing!

  • Welcome to Wikipedia. Glad you joined. I suggest you think about opening up your user page. You can put a little about yourself there -- a lot, if you like. Take a look at my user page -- or anyone else's -- for some ideas. If you want to add a photo, click "Upload file"; it's in the taskbar just to the left of here. You may find "Editing Help" useful, too. You can get there from the taskbar, and whenever you click "Edit this page" you'll see "Editing Help" just under the edit box.
I should mention that, although many of us have a great sense of humor, others do not. We have a constant problem with vandalism and many members spend a lot of time repairing damage, often caused by people who think they have a sense of humor. I'm not suggesting you fall into this class; merely that you may not wish to give anyone a reason to think of you in this way. Some of us take editing the world's foremost online encylcopedia entirely too seriously.
Browse around a little; get to know the local culture. I find it informative to check out user pages; this is the place where personal material is not only allowed, but encouraged.Another place to learn how WP really works is in the Talk pages (the "back side" of every article). Don't be afraid to join the debate, and never fear to ask any member for help.
I'm glad to see you have started in editing. You may want to specialize in things Florida, at least to start. You may build up a reputation for high-quality editing in only one or two areas; it might be harder to do well in several.
Again, welcome to the project. There are no direct rewards for participation, no experience points, no checks in the mail; we never sign articles and nobody "owns" them; many of us are strongly opposed to information control and WP is licensed under GFDL. What you take away from here cannot be weighed or put in a bottle or on a shelf, but it can be very precious still. It's what you make of it. — Xiong (talk) 14:51, 2005 Mar 24 (UTC)

The rewrite you did on the Bucky Katt article is fantastic! Great job weeding out the superfluous trivia, and making it sound encyclopedic. Stick around: we need more editors like you! Joyous 21:12, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Penny Arcade (comic)

I'd like to say you did an excellent job of cleaning up the article. --Poiuyt Man (talk) 12:44, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Infocom

Hey, Skeet. I noticed you've been editing quite a few Infocom articles. Your edits have really improved the articles. Since you seem to be an Infocom fan, if you haven't already, I suggest you read Down From the Top of Its Game: The Story of Infocom, Inc.. It's an excellent report on Infocom from its beginnings down to the smoking embers Activision left behind. I suggest the full PDF version of the report. If you get the chance, enjoy! :-) Frecklefoot | Talk 17:03, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi DynSkeet...not sure how to use this process.but I'll try 'editing' a related article...I started enjoying Infocom games on the Atari 800 and played most of the games..still have the Atari originals. I bought some time back the Lost Treasures, volumes 1 and 2 and dusted them off a few days ago to play again...but woe is me, with an XP Windows system, they wont load...any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot...John Hi, yeah, that guy was banned within a minute...but he'll be back tomorrow. I think this time is some sort of record though, he was banned after only about 30 edits, which is impressive since we know he's using a bot. Oh well...you can report stuff like that on Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress, but because he's using a bot and tries to make hundreds of edits at once, it's very easy to spot and someone will probably have dealt with it already. But you can report it there anyway just in case. Adam Bishop 17:27, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Infocom

Zork articles were my first edits on Wikipedia. I started out creating AFGNCAAP, Zork timeline, Zork calendar, and Zork magic. I'd like to bring Infocom to featured status at some point--probably not till at least the summer. --brian0918™ 19:41, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Maybe next we should create video game infoboxes for the games. --brian0918™ 17:41, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

See the example at Zork Grand Inquisitor, and the blank code to copy-and-paste is at the bottom of Template talk:Infobox CVG. We can just stick the game box cover pic in the infobox template. --brian0918™ 17:52, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

It'd probably be easier to just copy and paste the ZGI code and replace the proper things. --brian0918™ 17:54, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I can do the Zork series. I'm not too familiar with most of the other games made by Infocom (except for Infidel and maybe a couple others). --brian0918™ 17:59, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Assassinanny 911

Your changes to the "Assassinanny 911" storyline was a lot more than a minor copyedit, as you labeled it. It was a complete rewrite. It would be considerate to label it as such. --Boradis 05:58, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the response, no problem. --Boradis 23:12, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Go Team Venture

Thanks! Actually-I owe you a big thanks just as much. I suppose while I usually make these articles up in the first place, they have horrid quality at times-I've seen the major edits and additions you do to several episodes and characters, and frankly, I consider that just as important to the project, if not more so.

Give me a bit of time, work's honestly killed me from any new articles beyond the henchmen lately but I'll try to add in Molotov and Limb soon. Umbric Man 12th July 2006.
