==[[Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Dyslexic Agnostic]]==
Yikes, my take. Well, I just blocked Dyslexic for personal attacks. I did hope this would sort itself out, but I think the meat of the issue is that eventually they will both have to be banned from editing articles in which they engage in edit warring, or they'll both have to be banned full stop. Neither of them seems to be able to collaborate with each other, although of the two DA seems the more able to collaborate with others. T-Man's edits are not usually aimed at collaborating but at getting across his own methodology, whilst DA seems to have a compulsion to blindly revert T-Man's every edit. It can't go on much longer. *I'm just looking at the history of [[List of Batman: The Animated Series episodes]], and thinking that the two of them should be banned from that article for a week or two. What do you reckon? I think the only fair thing to do is to ban them both, there's no need for the personal attacks and edit summaries of DA, and edit warring is frowned upon and they were both placed on probation for disrupting articles. Hi Titoxd, I noticed when you close keep-AFDs you add the <nowiki>{{oldafdfull}}</nowiki> tag under the heading "== Old AFD Full==". == User advice ==

I'm not sure what exactly to do with a couple things I saw today, so I thought best to ask someone who has the admin mop and more experience than me. [[User:Storm05|Storm05]] created [[Tropical Storm Hanna (2002)]] after copy/pasting it from a subpage. I speedy-tagged it for a history merge and that problem was sorted. However when I explained the purpose of the tag to him, I think it wasn't understood and given what else he did at about that time, I think pretty much all his articles are copy/pastes. The second thing is [[User:HurricaneCraze32|HurricaneCraze32]] uploaded this post-hurricane damage [[:Image:Iris-2001-damage.jpg|image]]. The site in question does not seem to have any copyright information, but he initially tagged it as GFDL-licensed. Hink has removed that since, I think there is certainly a fair use case for that particular image, is that right? Anyway, that raised my interest and looked at his other [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=upload&user=HurricaneCraze32 uploads], and see plenty of PD-NOAA tagged images and other GFDL-tagged images. The NOAA pics are fine but the GFDL ones dodgy. I'm not sure what to do about those incorrectly tagged images, may be best to delete them, its possible to get PD ones of road signs I'm sure. I guess both users need the relevant things explained to them to stop them carrying on, but I'm not sure what to say really. Could you go do that and maybe give me some advice on how to deal with this kind of stuff? As for the mess they have left behind, that could keep you busy for a bit...--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 22:58, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for closing the SWU afd. I was wondering, there are some AfDs from July 2 (star wars lists and whatnot) that need to be closed. ==Topic priorities for release versions==

Hi, Tito. I had an idea related to [[User:Silence|Silence]]'s idea about assigning priorites of importance to articles considered for Version 0.5. I think the general idea of priority levels for topics is good, regardless of how much acceptance or agreement happens at 0.5.

But I'm thinking there might be a more efficient way to do it, mainly by using a larger set of numbers to designate the priorities, and also with a scale that is somewhat less relative. By that I mean that each priority level would correspond to a set of some defined number. Here are a couple of examples.

One option is based on powers of 10.
*Priority level 1 -- The 10 most important items.
*Level 2 -- The 11th to 100th most important items.
*3 -- The 101st to 1000th most important items, and so on.

Another option is based on doubling.*Priority set 100 -- The 100 most important items.
*Set 200 -- The 101st to 200th most important items.
*400 -- The 201st to 400th most important items, and so on.

These could be set up by continuing in the same vein as the core topics or with categories or both. Categories could allow subcategories, such as "the art articles within level x."

[[User:Walkerma|Walkerma]] mentioned a four-level scale already in use. But that only designates priorities within a given Wikiproject. The idea proposed here could apply to an article, and help put them in context with each other. [[User:Maurreen|Maurreen]] 12:10, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

:I also put a similar note [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team#Topic_priorities at the main team talk page]. [[User:Maurreen|Maurreen]] 15:37, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Seeing that NSLE has basically left and I think hink has gotten annoyed with this enough, I thought I'd ask you this; Do you think my articles on [[Typhoon Aere (2004)]] and [[Hurricane Dolly (1996)]] in my sandbox are ready for publication as their own articles? If Dolly is published, I think I'll still work on it, but there really isn't much more info. So what do you think? And if you have time, could you give them a nice copyedit? == Track maps ==

Don't mistake the fact that I've managed to get the program working and mess around with the code with actual competence, I'd rate myself as a beginner. I haven't really looked in any real detail at the source or attempted to understand it yet, so I don't know if its beyond me or not. Jdorje was good on adding useful comments to the source so I could easily see how to change the things I wanted to. In any case thing about toolserver seems interesting, what exactly would that involve and what would we get as an end result?

Oh and another thing could you look over [[Commons:Template:Hurricane auto track map]]? I played with it slightly to see if I could get the images assigned to the [[Commons:Category:Tropical cyclone tracks|commons category]] with some logic. I tested it on [[Commons:Image:Epsilon (2005) track.png]] and it worked fine. However I'm concerned about storms which are not of the form {type} {name}, [[1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane]] for example. Its probably best to leave those as they are currently and that also doesn't break the old track maps before I update them. It seems like a switch on the template is the best solution there as that allows both the current arrangement and a split into {type} {name} when easily doable; could you do that? It may be possible to some more with the unnamed storms, but seeing how I'm going to upload the named storms first anyway, one thing at a time. (Not least because I'll have to mess with the script to correct its automagic suggestions).--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 12:02, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

== AMS Journal Pictures: PD, Fair Use, or No Use? ==

Me and HurricaneHink were talking about this issue twice (once involving the picture of Hurricane Fifi and most recently involving a picture of Henri of 79, both of which are in AMS documents). Some documents are the same as the ones Hink got the pictures for the 1977-78 and 80-82 pictures from and others are the same as the documents I got my pictures from (such as Hurricanes Dora and Hilda). Are pictures from AMS journals fair use?

Also, I found a part of AMS' FAQ page that answers on needing written permission to use excerpts, but we're unsure if this applies to pictures. The excerpt is on the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:1979_Atlantic_hurricane_season|talk page]] for the 79 Atlantic season under "Images". Thanks!

== Track maps ==

There's a couple housekeeping tasks which I'm not sure how to go about with having updated the entire [[Commons:Category:Tropical cyclone tracks|Commons category]]. The 2006 Pacific storms are all hosted incorrectly on here and not Commons. In addition to those 2006's Alberto has ''three'' copies on commons of its image: [[Commons:Image:Alberto 2006 track.png]], [[Commons:Image:Alberto 2006 track2.png]] and [[Commons:Image:Alberto 2006 track.jpg]]. I know the first is the one which should be recolored, but should the others be deleted first? Also, [[Commons:Image:1926 Nassau hurricane track.png]] was created as a new file instead of being over the old one: [[Commons:Image:1926 Nassau Hurricane track.png]]. That's another redundant file which needs to go... Should I put them those 4 images up for deletion on commons? And what do I want to do about the 2006 Pacific storms - get them on commons then recolor?--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 14:41, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
:When you said "Copy the revisions", did you mean copy all versions of the images over or just all revisions of the image description (if it changed)? The only Alberto in use is the "correct" one, but the others aren't ''exact'' duplicates so do they need to go through the commons deletion process now? As for the Nassau pic thats sorted...--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 16:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
::Jeeze I didn't realise just how awful this looks like turning out to be. I've copied [[:Image:Aletta 2006 track.png|Aletta's map]] over to [[Commons:Image:Aletta 2006 track.png|Commons]] and tagged the image with NowCommonsThis. However I'm concerned about the "''Please always include the complete image caption and author, uploader and upload date to en wiki''" instruction given for commons moves. All the track maps hosted on the en wiki were uploaded by [[User:Reub2000|Reub2000]], who GFDL tagged them. However the Commons template that the track maps use licenses them as PD-Self, so a GFDL image is being moved to a PD image, that is looking for trouble <tt>:(</tt> I left him a message a few days ago about all manner of things), but he hasn't to acknowledged it. ==Version 0.5: accelerating loss of brain mass==
Hi again Titoxd! Thanks for your patience. The problem might be in my head in a generalized way (loss of brain mass), or specifically in my not knowing the "Good article" process that this is based on (I think?). I haven't been involved in that. Could you assist me with a single example, and then maybe I'll get a handle on it? I don't think ''[[The Giver]]'' ought to be part of Version 0.5. It's [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_0.5 here] (under "Literature"), [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Language_and_literature_Version_0.5_articles here], and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Version_0.5_articles_by_quality_log#June_30.2C_2006 here], but not [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Version_0.5_articles_by_quality here] or [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:V0.5N here]. To [[User talk:Jeffrey O. Gustafson|Jeffrey O. Gustafson]] who initiated this block request I ask why? We have had no interaction until now so how do you come to this requested action at [[WP:AN]]? Did you come across my account during your own research or are you acting as a proxy for another admin/user with whom I've caused to be angry with me? In reviewing your contributions I see no such "letter of the law" before now and so I feel singled out by you and I have no clue as to why - that to me is most disturbing. If you've come to this action on your own then should I be always wary of another admin challenging the legitimacy of my account?<br>

For [[User:TenOfAllTrades|TenOfAllTrades]] who advised me not to worry and [[User:Rick Block|Rick]] who made me laugh I give special thanks, you've helped me to not take this so personally. And to [[User talk:Jeffrey O. Gustafson|Jeff]], thanks for being courteous in informing me of your action and for letting me feel that your heart wasn't for blocking me. <br>
Except for my one explanation above, I haven't edited for a few days now so as to allow y'all to comment about this based on my history of contribution rather than my reaction to it. <br>

I wanted to say all of this before it all goes to archive heaven. I still have a lingering concern that this may arise again and don't want to go through WP life looking over my shoulder or worrying that I might piss-off some admin and cause another inquiry about the legitimacy of my account. If any of you who have been so gracious as to take the time to support me here have any suggestions to prevent such an action, please drop your thoughts on my talk or by email. <br>

Finally, on a personal note to all, I never ever expected so much supportive response from all of you. I know that I've been moody at times and have spoken in ways that I have regretted the next day. I hoped otherwise but it seemed that those unfortunate responses might end up being my legacy as they were the foremost in my mind. And so far as this being a "role account", I think that I'll let the descriptions of [[User:Musical Linguist|AnnH]] and [[User:NoSeptember|NoSeptember]] (both above) stand as the most intuitive descriptions of this account. My (and our) warmest regards to all of you for your understanding and outward support for the continuation of [[User:Hydnjo|hydnjo's]] user account and future contributions. Again, my delighted and humble thanks :-) --[[User:Hydnjo|hydnjo]] [[User talk:Hydnjo|talk]] 02:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

'''addendum:''' Jeff, I was confused at the outset in that I wasn't aware of the "role account" policy and then after becoming aware I was frustrated that I had made so many edits which could mislead someone to the conclusion that my account was a role account. I'm sorry that in my zeal to understand your actions that I posed the possibility that you were acting at someone else's behest. I have no evidence of that and it was improper of me to even mention that such a bizarre conspiracy was possible. I find myself guilty of "blaming the messenger" and posting an inappropriate comment about your motivation. <br>

As for my account, I want to state that it is not a role account and I apologize for leaving the impression that it is one. "'''hydnjo'''" is the signature that I commonly use for much of my correspondence and thought it to be appropriate when I first started my WP account. The portmanteau is an acknowledgment of our shared existence and not an indication that Heidi and I share in editing at WP.<br>

I thank you for your courtesy in informing me at the outset of the discussion at [[WP:AN]] and for your compliments about my contributions. The comments in my response were made in the shadow of my own frustration with my having left a trail of edits that could easily be construed as having come from either Heidi or myself. I sincerely apologize to you for making any suggestion as to your motivation in bringing up a legitimate policy question. You have a genuine concern for the orderly behavior of our editors and I thank you for initiating this discussion and providing me the opportunity to explain the nature of my account. --[[User:Hydnjo|hydnjo]] [[User talk:Hydnjo|talk]] 18:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

== Libya ==

Hi,

I've recently added [[Libya]] to the list of featured article candidates. Overall the candidature is going well with many of the objections now sorted out. The final concrete objection is with the article's prose. I have been the main contributor to the article and have been looking at it for the previous 9 - 10 months. My eyes no longer see it freshly, so I am not a suitable copy-editor!

To meet the final demand of copy editing, I have been advised to ask different people to edit parts of the article.

I would really love to get this article featured as you can probably see from the page's history! I've worked very hard on it and I see this as possibly being the final hurdle.

You can see the prose objections, mostly raised by [[User:SandyGeorgia|Sandy]], on the [[Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Libya|candidature page]]. If you have the time, please choose a section (Politics, Religion, Culture etc.) and <s>copyedit<s>, <s>perfect<s>, ace it! I would be very grateful with any help I can get.

Thanks a lot,

:No. They are all from much earlier, from bugs which allowed the creation of pages with bad titles. == TC Dabs and Cats ==

Yuck, this is horrible... I'm starting to plod through these now, but I feel its just going to be ''hideous''. For a start I think I'm going to need admin help for a lot of them. Here's a couple so far:
*[[Hurricane Adrian]] redirects to [[Hurricane Adrian (2005)]] and the disambig is at [[Hurricane Adrian (disambiguation)]]. As Adrian wasn't retired last year that's clearly wrong...
*[[Tropical Storm Allison (disambiguation)]] is a redirect to [[Hurricane Allison (disambiguation)]]. However both have non-trivial edit histories so a history merge might be needed and despite what Jdorje said in his edit summaries on both, [[Tropical Storm Allison (disambiguation)]] ''is'' the correct one, due to the existence of 4 storms named "Alison" in the southern Hemisphere (check [[List of named tropical cyclones]]).

As you can see thats barely halfway through A, theres going to be many many similar problems I'm sure. Should I just list them up at [[WP:RM]] as and when I find them?

Also I made a created a couple bad cats in the SH recategorising, [[:Category:2005-06 Australian tropical cyclone season]] instead of [[:Category:2005-06 Australian cyclone season]] and [[:Category:1983-1984 Australian cyclone season]] instead of [[:Category:1983-84 Australian cyclone season]]. ===Thoughts?===
*DA left me a note too. I'm trying to clear the mess up, but I really don't know what to do with T-Man. He seems to have disregarded consensus at [[List of Justice League episodes]] and not helped his case at [[Talk:List of Justice League episodes]]. Whilst he's made comments which border on the margins of incivility, I'm not sure they come in for being personal attacks. I don't judge his comment against DA which DA links to above as a personal attack, it's rather his sloppy english I think. That said, if you happen to take a diffrent view, I would respect that. However, his subpage creation at [[User talk:T-man, the Wise Scarecrow/Vandalism & Harassment]] is something I would consider a personal attack, and I've asked him not to create these before. Looking at his arb com page, he's up to 4 blocks for personal attacks, so his permanent ban doesn't kick in yet. I'm not sure what to do with this. I've left a note with DA to leave T-Man well alone, and I've asked T-Man to consider letting me delete it, otherwise I will list it at MFD. == Copyright on track maps ==

I'm not sure about the copyright issues with utilising Gary Padgett's summaries for making the track maps. He prepares track data for all storms in all basins, generally utilising data from the JTWC. The raw data from the JTWC data is available online at the NRL. Does this mean I can just use his text to make the track map and then just source to the JTWC, without attribution to him? After all I could collate exactly the same data myself but it would take a lot of time and effort. If I do have to give him attribution, does that mean that I cannot claim the image as PD-self? Would some other commons-permissible license be usable if that is a problem?

In addition he utilises other sources (the RSMCs) than the JTWC in preparing some of the tracks. Can I make use of the JMA or Australian BoM best track data ''at all'', and if I can do I need to use a different license to PD-self (for the images). Again, do I need to attribute GP when I make use of his tracks, some of the time he uses his judgement to pick which of the JTWC or the RSMC to go with. And then there is [[Commons:Image:Catarina 2004 track.png|Catarina]] where he publishes a track prepared by another private individual. Is the image description I have provided there adequate?

Or am I just worrying about nothing here, as long as I source the location of the original advisories can I just use it as is done with the Atlantic storms?--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 14:34, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
:I think that is mostly paranoia on my part. I'm having to go to the original warnings to generate the data anyway, and I'm merely referring to his summaries to verify I have them right. However, there is a couple things I'm unsure of. When generating track maps am I correct in thinking that there are no copyright problems? My guess is that the bulletins are protected by the copyright of the issuing organization (if it has any), but I can use the data without being concerned about copyright issues. That is as long as I satisfy [[WP:V]] and link to the source of the data. On that note is the citing in Catarina's image description OK? Thanks.--[[User:Nilfanion|Nilfanion]] ([[User talk:Nilfanion|talk]]) 14:57, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

== Count of a user's deleted edits ==

I think this has been asked before but is there a way to find all edits by a user in articles which have since been deleted? I have a somewhat subtle vandal who is quietly snipping out large chunks of articles and then requesting speedy deletion. When admins don't check the history correctly, the article gets deleted. I've restored two so far but only by scanning the vandal's talk page for red links (when people caught him/her in the act).
