The Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award, named after the 11th President of India and aerospace scientist A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is awarded by the Government of Tamil Nadu in recognition of contributions on scientific development, humanities and students' welfare.[1]

On 31 July, 2015, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa announced that an award will be given annually in the name of former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The award prize will be five hundred thousand Indian rupees, certificate and eight grams weighing gold medal.[2]

The award is scheduled run on each Independence Day of India (15 August) from 2015 onward.[3] First award was given to ISRO scientist, N. Valarmathi.

Winners

  • 2015 – N. Valarmathi, woman scientist of ISRO, contributed to India's first home-developed radar imaging satellite RISAT-1.[4]
