Project Setsuna, known as Ikenie to Yuki no Setsunaいけにえと雪のセツナ in Japan, is an upcoming Japanese role-playing video game, developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix. It is schedule for a worldwide release in 2016 for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita platforms.
Gameplay
The game has been described as a "pure fantasy, true RPG" by Square Enix.[1] The game is meant to replicate the feeling and gameplay of the 1990 iterations of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Chrono Trigger.[1] The game will also incorporate the company's turn based "Active Time Battle" system.[1]
Development
The game was first announced in June 2015 during E3 2015.[2] Only a few key details were provided; mainly that it would be a role-playing video game developed by a newly created development team within Square Enix called "Tokyo RPG Factory", with a code name of Project Setsuna.[3] The game is a new IP,[4] not a spinoff, though its meant to evoke nostalgia and emotions from game's from Square's past.[5] Additionally, a few pieces of concept art were released, and the title was announced as a PlayStation 4 title[6] with a worldwide release in 2016.[7] Further information was released in July, with Square explaining that sadness would be a major theme in the title, with "Setsuna" originating from the Japanese word "setsunasa", roughly meaning sadness or sorrow.[4] Also announced were intentions to keep the game's development time relatively short, re-emphasizing the title's 2016 release window.[4] The game was later shown in September 2015 as part of Sony's Conference for the Tokyo Game Show.[8] There, it was revealed to be released under the title Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, which roughly translates to Setsuna of Sacrifice and Snow in Japan.[8] Additionally, it was announced that the title was 60% complete,[9] would be coming to the PlayStation Vita as well, and that both versions were scheduled for "early 2016" in Japan.[5] There are not any differences in content between the two versions of the game, with the only exception being that the PlayStation 4 version being made to look better on a larger screen.[10]
Reception
Pre-release
Many journalists favorably compared the title to Chrono Trigger,[11][12][13][14] some even suspecting it to be a spiritual successor to the Chrono series series.[11][15]
