== Illinois State Society of Washington, DC ==

The Illinois State Society of Washington, DC was founded in 1854. The original name was Illinois Democratic Club of Washington City but the name changed to Illinois Republican Club when President Lincoln was inaugurated in March of 1861. In spite of name changes such as the Illinois State Association from 1967 to 1917, the club included government clerks from both parties and others before civil service reform. In 1917, all the state societies in Washington, DC became nonpartisan to support President Woodrow Wilson during World War I and the club name permanently was changed to Illinois State Society of Washington, DC. In 2015 the society had about 450 members who were Illinois expatriates living in the national capital area and who worked as Congressional staff and in the private sector and military. The society is the oldest of the state clubs in Washington, DC. Every four years since 1861 it has hosted <ref>www.IllinoisStateSociety.org</ref>an Inauguration gala no matter which party wins the White House. Every year since 1948 it has sponsored the Illinois Cherry Blossom Princess to represent the state in the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
