Azercell is a mobile telecommunications company, located in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Company background

Azercell Telecom LLC was established on 19 January 1996. Founders were Turkcell and Ministry of Communications of Azerbaijan Republic.

Azercell Telecom started its activities on 15 December 1996 offering subscribers mobile telecommunications services based on postpaid system. In 1998 prepaid system was launched with tariff package — SimSim.

LTE service

Azercell announced on 24 May 2012, the launch of services based on the 4G platform. At the initial stage Azercell's 4G network will cover the downtown area and the Seaside National Park in Baku. The network will operate on 1800 MHz frequency.[1] Azercell intends to fully cover the 4G services in Baku until May 2013. The second region where the 4G network will be deployed, will be the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.[2]

Market share and coverage

Azercell currently holds more than 57.6% of the market share in mobile telecommunications with a network covering 80 percent of Azerbaijan's territory and 99.7 percent of the populated area.[citation needed]

Investments

Since Azercell began operations in December 1996, the company has invested more than US$1 billion in Azerbaijan.[citation needed]

Taxes

According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Taxes, Azercell Telecom LLC is the second largest taxpayer operating outside of the country’s oil sector. During its first five years of activity, the company contributed a total of US$780 million into the state budget and other state funds.[citation needed]
