In compliance with Azerbaijan’s medieval traditions of urban development, Shusha castle walls were built with four gates. The main gate was facing north towards the road to [[Ganja, Azerbaijan]] and was therefore named Ganja Gate. The western gate was facing western regions including [[Khanate of Erevan]] and was hence called Irevan Gate. The other two gates opened to surrounding highland villages. Ganja Gate of Shusha (Azerbaijani: Gəncə qapısı) is one of four entrance gates to Shusha fortress in Shusha Rayon of Azerbaijan.[1][2] Shusha has been under the control of the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic since the Capture of Shusha on May 8, 1992.[3][4][5]

Description

In compliance with Azerbaijan’s medieval traditions of urban development, Shusha castle walls were built with four gates. The main gate was facing north towards the road to Ganja, Azerbaijan and was therefore named Ganja Gate. The western gate was facing western regions including Khanate of Erevan and was hence called Irevan Gate. The other two gates opened to surrounding highland villages. Shusha’s internal castle was located on a peak near the Ganja Gate.[3] The Ganja Gate bears an architectural importance and is often mentioned among other significant 549 attributes of Shusha State Historical and Architectural Reserve of the 18th century.[6][7][8] Ganja Gate is located on Niyazi street.[2]
