Gurmehal Kaur is an Indian activist. She is studying English Literature at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi University. She is also the ambassador for Postcards for Peace, a charitable organisation that helps eliminate any form of discrimination.[1] Gurmehar Kaur came to news as she was a part of the ‘Save DU campaign’ following the clashes in Ramjas College last week where activists of the ABVP allegedly clashed with students, where JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited for a seminar.
Early life
Gurmehar Kaur was born Jalandhar. Her father Mandeep Singh was an army officer and came to death after a Rashtriya Rifles camp came under militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 1999. He was one of the seven personnel killed in the attack. She was just two years old when she lost her father.
Social Activism
Gurmehar Kaur launched a #ProfileForPeace campaign last April, advocating peace between India and Pakistan. It was a viral video. In 2017, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India Kiren Rijiju commented on her video that it was antinational.[2] Some Celebrities like Virender Sehwag and Randeep Hooda tried to trolled her on twitter.[3] Javed Akhtar also commented on this issue as he counter attacked on all those who were against the Gurmhehar.[4]
