R.C. Grand Prix is a top-down isometric racing game for the Master System video game console. It was released in Europe and United States in 1990.[1]
Gameplay
R.C. Grand Prix is a top-down isometric racing game.[2] The player controls a remote control car and races against 3 other cars to become the grand champion. The player have to play through 10 increasingly difficult stages and buy new parts for the controlled car from the prize-money awarded from each stage. If the player is placed last in a stage or does not complete the stage within the time-limit, the game is over.
It is possible to play this game in multi-player mode with up to 4 players. The players play through each stage, one at the time, and the order of play is based on the current standings in the game. The game also features a drag race bonus stage which is only available in multi-player mode. Here, two players race each other for some bonus price-money.
Like most other Master System games, R.C. Grand Prix does not have a battery save option, meaning the game cannot be saved. This also includes the final score of the game.
Buying Parts
Following a stage the player is awarded price-money based on their position and the extra time left. First place rewards, 100G, second 50G and third 25G. Each second within the time limit awards 1G. Between stages the player can buy different parts at the store to improve the remote control car:
- Engines:
- High Torque Motor (120 G): Provides fast acceleration, but low increase in top speed
- High Speed Motor (140 G): Slow acceleration but decent top speed
- Ultra Motor (180 G): Decent acceleration and high top speed
- Tires:
- Improved Tires (120 G): Slight increase in control
- Ultra Tires (190 G): Increase in control
- Suspension:
- Improved Tires (125 G): Slight increase in turning control
- Ultra Tires (180 G): Increase in turning control
- Gears:
- High Torque Gears (120 G): Increase in acceleration
- High Speed Gears (150 G): Increase in top speed
- Ultra Gears (180 G): Increase in both acceleration and top speed
- Batteries:
- High Current Batteries (130 G): Small speed increase that last the entire stage
- Ultra Batteries (130 G): High speed increase that last the entire stage
Racing Track
All the 10 racing tracks consist of dirt roads which are intertwined in one big grassy area with orange cones on the side of the tracks. Therefore, it is possible in some stages to drive out of the correct track and into other tracks of the game.
