Joan Boocock Lee (Joan Clayton Boocock; August 3, 1924 – July 6, 2017) was a British-born American hat model and actress. She was notable for her 69-year marriage to comic book writer Stan Lee. In the 1940s, Lee was a hat model in New York City when she met Stan Lee.[1] In her later years, she became a voice actress and provided her voice in Spider-Man and Fantastic Four both in the 1990s.

Early life

Lee was born on August 3, 1924 in Gosforth, Newcastle[2]. In her early years, Lee was a well known hat model in the New York City-area.[3]

Marriage to Stan Lee

Before marrying Stan Lee, she was married to an unnamed American soldier when she met Lee in New York.[1] After wanting to marry Lee, she moved to Reno, Nevada for a short while to establish residency. In 1947, Lee divorced the American soldier and promptly married Stan Lee in the room next door.[1] Together they had two children.[4][5] In 1949, the couple bought a two-story, three-bedroom home at 1084 West Broadway in Woodmere, New York, on Long Island, living there through 1952.[6]

In some versions of the origin of the Fantastic Four, Lee credits Joan with inspiring him.[3] He was depressed about his career and contemplated leaving the business. Lee told her husband: "why don’t you write one comic you are proud of?".[7] Afterwards, Lee created the Fantastic Four.

Career

In 1981, Stan and Joan Lee moved from New York City to Los Angeles, California. Lee did voice work on two 1990s animated Marvel shows, Fantastic Four as Miss Forbes and Spider-Man as Madame Web.[8] She also made a cameo in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse alongside her husband.[9]

Writing

Lee also wrote a 1987 novel titled The Pleasure Palace.[10] It was about a man striving to build the most luxurious ocean liner ever while romancing several women at once. According to her daughter, she had three more unpublished but finished novels at home.[1]

Death

Lee died on July 6, 2017 in Los Angeles from stroke-related complications after being hospitalized for a week.[11] She was 93 years old.[1]
