Abbe David Lowell (born c. 1952)[1] is an American defense attorney who was Chief Minority Counsel to Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives during the impeachment of Bill Clinton in the Lewinsky scandal.[2]

Lowell graduated from Columbia University in 1974, and Columbia Law School in 1977.[3][4]

In 1982, Lowell ran unsuccessfully for the Maryland House of Delegates as a Democrat.[1]

Lowell worked in the U.S. Department of Justice, including a stint as an assistant to Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti.[5][when?] He has been an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law Center and Columbia University.[6] [when?]

Lowell has defended political figures including John Edwards,[7] Jim Wright, Dan Rostenkowski, Charles Keating,[8] Gary Condit,[9] former Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons,[10] U.S. Rep. Joseph McDade[11] and lobbyist Jack Abramoff.[2] As of June 2017, Lowell is representing Jared Kushner and ivanka in inquiries linked to Russia.[12]

Lowell was part of the defense of Stephen Jin-Woo Kim,[13] a State Department contractor who pleaded guilty to a felony count of disclosing classified American intelligence on North Korea.

He is currently a partner at the firm of Norton Rose Fulbright.[14] He has appeared in the media as a legal affairs expert.[15]

Lowell is head of the Development Committee and a Trustee of The Shakespeare Theatre and is an active member of the Jewish Community, serving as Vice President and General Counsel of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington.[16]

Lowell will be representing Jared Kushner in the ongoing Russian investigation, after Jamie Gorelick stepped back from the lead role in July 2017.[17]
