Krishnamurti is a South Indian name. It has several spelling variants.

Variants

The following is a non-exhaustive list. Some spellings separate the name elements (see § Etymology and usage), e.g. Krishna Murti.

  • Krishnamoorthi
  • Krishnamoorthy
  • Krishnamoorti
  • Krishnamoorty
  • Krishnamurthi
  • Krishnamurthy
  • Krishnamurty

Etymology and usage

It derives from Krishna, one of the Hindu deities, and from the Sanskrit term murti. A main dictionary meaning of murti (or murthy) is "form"; [1] therefore, the name translates as "in the form (or image) of Krishna". In most cases it is a given name; it may also be a family name, or it may have been westernized into a surname.

Non-Indian nationality is noted when known.
