About

Wikipedia is the world’s most popular online research tool, serving as the first—and often only—stop for many people looking for information on a wide range of topics. Frequently touted as an unbiased resource, analysis has shown that there is an alarming gap in content by and about women and other underrepresented groups, falsely suggesting that their contributions to their respective fields are either unimportant or non-existent. This March let’s join the many other museums, libraries, and academic institutions that are working to help correct this imbalance in the historical record!

Join us for communal updating of Wikipedia Commons resources and Wikipedia article entries on subjects related to architecture, gender, feminism, the arts, and other topics of intersection. Together we can help provide documentation, add needed visuals and citations, and enhance the depth of resources out there. Drop in for as long as you want to edit, add, learn, or simply talk with others who might provide ideas or points of common interest across fields. Bring a laptop (we will have a few computers on hand) and we will provide tutorials for beginner Wikipedians, reference materials, suggestions to get started, and refreshments.

Preparation

  1. If you do not already have one, please create a Wikimedia account
  2. After creating an account or logging in, please register for this event
  3. The most challenging part of editing wiki is doing research off wiki. If you want to do advance preparation, do traditional library research to find reliable sources of information which you will share in Wikimedia projects!
    1. For Wikipedia editing, bring books or articles to summarize and cite!
    2. Bring photos of anything, such as buildings on campus, to share in Wikimedia Commons! Learn about copyright at the event!
    3. Become familiar with any interesting database and plan to share information from that database in Wikidata!
