Austral Ecology: A Journal of Ecology in the Southern Hemisphere is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research related to the ecology of land, marine and freshwater systems in the Southern Hemisphere[1]. Published by Wiley, it is the official journal of the Ecological Society of Australia (ESA).
Austral Ecology is the premier journal for basic and applied ecology in the Southern Hemisphere. Austral Ecology addresses the commonality between ecosystems in Australia and many parts of southern Africa, South America, New Zealand and Oceania. For example many species in the unique biotas of these regions share common Gondwana ancestors. ESA's aim is to publish innovative research to encourage the sharing of information and experiences that enrich the understanding of the ecology of the Southern Hemisphere. [2]
First published in 1976 as Australian Journal of Ecology, it adopted its current name in 2000. There are eight issues per year. As of 2019 there have been 44 volumes. At that time it had an impact factor of 1.73 and ISI Journal Citation Reports [3]© Ranking: 2017:96/160 (ECOLOGY)[4].
The current Editor-in-Chief is Professor Nigel Andrew, Zoology, University of New England, Armidale, NSW Australia. He took over the role in January 2017. The previous Managing Editor was Professor Mike Bull who passed away suddenly in 2016[5]. Mike was Editor of the Australian Journal of Ecology/ Austral Ecology since 1997.

Austral Ecology publishes the following manuscript types [7]:
- Invited Reviews
- Reviews
- Research Articles
- Research Notes
- Forum
- Ecological Toolkit
- Natural History Notes
The journal has an early reviewer scheme. There are a number of senior PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, or ecologists in the early stages of their employment in other positions, who have the skills and knowledge to qualify them to comment on submitted manuscripts, but who feel that they lack the experience or confidence to embark on a manuscript review. This early reviewer scheme is seen this as a mutualistic arrangement. The journal gains from having an additional pool of reviewers, the Early Career Reviewers gain from building their experience in the journal publishing process, from a different perspective than as submitting authors.
