David Zwirner Gallery is an American contemporary art gallery owned by David Zwirner. It has three gallery spaces in New York City and one in both London and Hong Kong.[1] David Zwirner will open its sixth location in Paris in October 2019.[2]
History
Zwirner opened his first gallery in 1993 on the ground floor of 43 Greene Street in SoHo in New York City,[3] with a one-man show of the Austrian sculptor Franz West.[4] In 2002, he moved to 525 West 19th Street in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York.[5] In 2012, he opened a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) London branch in Grafton Street, in Mayfair, and built a large new space – designed by Annabelle Selldorf – at 537 West 20th Street, Chelsea, New York.[6]
In September 2017, David Zwirner Gallery opened an Upper East Side space in a 1907 townhouse re-designed by Selldorf, right off of Madison Avenue.[7] The gallery's 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) space[8] at the H Queen’s building in Hong Kong was also designed by Selldorf.[1][9]
In early 2018, David Zwirner Gallery announced the launch of its fifth location in New York – and its seventh space worldwide – for autumn 2020. The five-story, $50 million Renzo Piano-designed gallery on the corner of West 21st Street is set to become Zwirner’s new headquarters, featuring 50,000 sq ft (4,600 m2) of exhibition space as well as souped-up offices and storage facilities.[10] In 2019, David Zwirner Gallery announced plans to open an 8,600 sq ft (800 m2) outpost in the Marais district of Paris, its first in continental Europe.[11]
As of 2018, according to The New York Times, David Zwirner Gallery reports annual revenues of 500 million dollars, with 165 employees and a growing stable of more than 50 artists and estates.[10]
Artists
David Zwirner Gallery has at various times exhibited works by Marlene Dumas, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Neo Rauch, Jason Rhoades, Luc Tuymans and Doug Wheeler.[1] In 2009–2010, minimalist works by Larry Bell, John McCracken, Fred Sandback and James Turrell were shown.[12]
In 2013 Yayoi Kusama said that she would show at the gallery.[13] In 2016, the gallery showed photographs by William Eggleston.[14]
In early 2018, the Estate of Franz West returned to David Zwirner Gallery 17 years after West left the gallery for Gagosian in 2000.[10]
In 2019, the Estate of Paul Klee joined the gallery, marking the first time that the Klee family worked with a commercial gallery.[15] In September 2019, the gallery will present its first exhibition of Klee's work.[16]
Publishing
Founded in 2014, David Zwirner Books distributed its offerings through Artbook D.A.P. until 2019. That year, it entered a partnership with Simon & Schuster.[17]
