The AEW World Championship is a world championship[1] created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW). First unveiled on May 25, 2019 at Double or Nothing, it is the top championship of AEW. The inaugural and current champion is Chris Jericho.
History
On January 1, 2019, the professional wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was founded and its inaugural event, Double or Nothing, was scheduled for May 25.[2][3][4] The unveiling of the promotion's world championship was first teased on AEW's YouTube channel on May 22, where actor and comedian Jack Whitehall comedically attempted to reveal the title belt but struggled to get the championship out of its bag. During that same video, Whitehall revealed that the winner of Double or Nothing's Buy In pre-show battle royal, called the Casino Battle Royale, would face the winner of Double or Nothing's main event at a future date to determine the inaugural AEW World Champion.[5] The Casino Battle Royale was won by Adam Page,[6] while Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in the main event, setting up the inaugural championship match. During Double or Nothing, veteran wrestler Bret Hart unveiled the AEW World Championship belt.[7]
The inaugural championship match was then confirmed for AEW's event All Out on August 31,[8] where Jericho defeated Page in the main event to become the inaugural champion.[9] The following day while traveling, Jericho's championship belt was stolen from his rented limousine.[10] On September 4, the Tallahassee Police Department recovered the title.[11]

As of November 4, 2024, there has been one reign. The inaugural champion is Chris Jericho. He won the title by defeating Adam Page at All Out on August 31, 2019 in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
