Barend Jan Terwiel is a Dutch-Australian anthropologist, historian and an expert on Thailand. He was born on 24 November 1941 in Ginneken, Netherlands. He has written books on ethnology of Thailand, the history of Thai culture as well as research on the Southeast Asian shrew.[1] He retired in 2006, although he still writes about Thailand, releasing a new edition of his book Thailand's Political History.[2]

Education

He received three degrees between 1965 and 1972. He received a degree in Cultural Anthropology in 1965, another degree in 1967 in the History of Buddhism and a Ph.D in 1972.[3] For his Ph.D, he wrote an analysis of religion in a Thai village.[2]

Career

In his career, Barend has taught in Canbeera, Munich, Leiden and Hamburg.[2]
