Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick are jellyfishing at Jellyfish Fields. Patrick accidentally falls down a cliff, and loses his head. SpongeBob accidentally picks up a piece of Brain Coral and puts it on what is left of Patrick's head, from which Patrick suddenly gains intelligence. Patrick seems to be interested in nature, work and almost any music when he is intelligent. He loses interest in all the things he and SpongeBob enjoyed, and actually hangs out with Squidward and Sandy, until driving them both away with his patronizing attitude (he tells Squidward to find himself a new musical mentor and tells Sandy that she does not have the ability to solve remedial equations). Then, since he is too smart even for them, Patrick wants to be friends with SpongeBob again. He tries many solutions to solve his problem, such as comparing himself with SpongeBob, meditating, doing research on a squid, reading books about fun, and even growing hair, but none of these things work, until he kidnaps SpongeBob and tries doing all the activities he used to do. When this doesn't work, he tries to redo his actions by falling off the cliff again. SpongeBob then realizes it was the piece of brain coral that he grabbed, so he restores Patrick's old head.

Cultural References

  • The episode is similar in plot to the novell Flowers for Algernon in which the protagonist gains intelligence quickly but then wishes it gone because of the way others see him.
  • Squidward plays a song that Patrick identifies to be titled "Symphony In Blue" - a possible reference to a song of the same name on Kate Bush's album Lionheart. It could also be a reference to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Trivia/Goofs

  • It is possible that Patrick doesn't have a brain before he placed brain coral on himself. When brain coral was placed onto him, gears in has head start running. This could mean his former head had no brain.
  • The first few times this episode was shown, it had scrolling captions. This was later changed.
  • Smart Patrick is so upset by no longer understanding SpongeBob's concept of fun that he makes a solution that makes his hair grow, just so that he can pull it out in his anger. This is ironically the answer to Squidward's dream to have hair.
  • Patrick calls SpongeBob "Robert", which indicates that SpongeBob's real name may be SpongeRobert SquarePants (Longer version of Bob). However, his full name as Robert is not confirmed by Hillenburg. Also, in the scene where Patrick is in Sandy's treedome, Patrick calls her "Sandra", which indicates that Sandy's real name may be Sandra Cheeks. However, her full name as Sandra is not confirmed by Hillenburg. Patrick may be calling them by their "full" names just to sound smart, though.
  • SpongeBob and Normal Patrick both have a talent for belch-talking.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick both have a scrapbook full of photos of them having fun together.
  • This episode is also called Abracamoron.
  • Patrick's brain was also removed in DJ Patrick.
