The original airstrip at Nha Trang USAFB was built by American soldiers in 1965 under the supervision of USAF (retired) Sgt. Dennis F. O’Neill, a Civil Engineer assigned to Nha Trang as his next tour of duty at age 29. Sgt. O’Neill and his men cleared out dangerous, thick jungle areas with machetes and the tools at hand. Sgt. O‘Neill was SIA (Seriously Injured in Action) after he was in Nha Trang for six months when the village was under mortar bomb attack. He spent months recooperating at Clark AFB until he was stable enough to be flown to Lackland AFB Hospital where he was treated for internal bleeding and spent months recooperating before his discharge to be reunited with his wife and four children. He continued to serve in the USAF until his retirement. Sgt. O’Neill is still now 87 and still living with his wife of nearly 67 years.
