Biography

Carolann Page was born in Odessa, Texas to conductor Robert Page and Carnegie Mellon voice teacher Glynn Page.[1][2] She grew up in Philadelphia and studied voice there at the Curtis Institute of Music.[3] She has had a prolific career in theater, opera, and pops orchestra throughout various houses in New York and worldwide. She has taught voice at the Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and, currently, at Westminster College of the Arts of Rider University.[1] Her sister, Paula Page, is a professor of harp at Rice University and her son, Alexander Gemingani, is a Broadway actor and musical director.[4][5]

Career

Carolann Page made her professional debut in 1973 at the Marlboro Music Festival, as a soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy conducted by Pablo Casals, with Rudolf Serkin at the piano.[6]

Page gained international recognition in 1987 when she created the role of Pat Nixon in John Adams' opera Nixon In China, directed by Peter Sellars.[7] For her role as Pat Nixon, The Guardian wrote, “Carolann Page’s lyric soprano exultantly ravishes the ear.”[8] She also created the role of Celia in Carlisle Floyd's The Passion of Jonathan Wade, Mamah Cheney in Daron Hagen’s Shining Brow and Gayle in Micheal Tippett’s The Ice Break (in concert).[9][10]

Broadway appearances include Cunegonde in Hal Prince’s revival of Candide, Majorie in Allegro (Encores! series), Music Is, directed by the legendary George Abbott, and Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall, directed by Scott Ellis.[11]

Off-Broadway, Page’s diverse creations include Mary Lincoln in Asylum: The Strange Case of Mary Lincoln (York Theatre)[12], Gertrude Stein in Blood on the Dining Room Floor (Signature Theatre)[13], Sophie in The Fishkin Touch (Jewish Repertory Theatre)[14], Eleanor Roosevelt in John La Chuisa’s First Lady Suite (The Public Theatre)[15], and Iowa Housewife in Menopause, the Musical (Playhouse 91).[16]

Page has appeared with major symphonies internationally including Dallas, Cleveland, Houston, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, the London Sinfonietta and Brno Philharmonic Orchestra with repertoire from Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Britten and Gorecki. She presented her own "Evening of Sondheim" with the Boston and San Francisco pops orchestras.[1][17]

Her chamber music and recital appearances include An die Musik, Da Camera Society and Cape and Islands.[1]
