Origin

Gerard Way was working in New York as a comic-book artist and witnessed 9/11. Witnessing these attack made Gerard face the reality that his life isn't helping anyone, and he wanted to change that. He went back home to New Jersey where he called up Matt Pelissier, My Chemical Romance's former drummer, and they wrote the song together in Matt's attic.

Meaning

The song is about, even after witnessing an event like 9/11, the fact that Gerard Way and others should carry on with life and do something with it in case it is taken away like the lives of those in the attacks.
