Traverse City Central High School (also known as Central High, Central, TCC, or CHS) is a public high school in Traverse City, Michigan. It is one of three high schools in the Traverse City Area Public Schools district.[3]
History
The first public school in Traverse City, Traverse City Senior High School, opened in 1853 at the 300 block of Seventh Street[4]. In 1934, the original school building burned down[5][6], and for until 1937, students were relocated to the nearby Perry Hannah House while the school was being rebuilt[7][8].
In the early 1960s, the school was moved into another new building[9], this one on grounds formerly owned by the Northwestern Michigan College. The former building was converted into Traverse City Junior High School, and again 1970 as Central Grade School, an elementary building.
In 1997, because of overcrowding at the school, which had since become the largest high school in Michigan, a second high school was built, and opened in early 1998. The new high school became Traverse City West Senior High School, and the former TCSHS became Traverse City Central High School[10].
