== India ==

There is a longstanding tradition on [[India]] of images being added only every so often after extended discussion. We will have another in November. If you are a photographer, you will be most welcome to weigh in then. Many current images will be replaced. In fact, why don't you be one of the judges? (We always have a hard time judging the image quality.) But, please, not now. Otherwise, in a much-viewed article (> 40K views a day) with much drive-by vandalism, we will be soon in a mess. I have been managing India for 13 years. Amazing!

Hi, Charles! I've always admired your work, it is truly amazing. Thank you so much for sharing it with us, and especially for creating that magazine to share. It was a very kind and generous gesture on your part. Atsme Talk 📧 15:49, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help

Hey, Charles! You're the one willing to call me out on things, and I genuinely appreciate that, which is why I'd rather ask you for advice, because I know you'll tell me straight.

So, you may have noticed that in the La reine de Chypre nomination, I didn't list its use in Charles-Antoine Cambon, just put that as a +1. This is because Cambon largely does chiaroscuro drawings - you know, paper of some colour - mainly grey, brown, yellow, light blue, or kind of a drab olive green from what I've seen, with black and white ink added. His article should reflect that, I think, but he did do some full-colour art.

...Now, La reine de Chypre Act V scene II is perfectly fine, but I'm not sure it's the best exemplar of his work for his article. Would you mind giving me your opinion on some other options?

Way too much detail on search, feel free to skip There are 741 images on Gallica that come up under a search for Charles Cambon, but the vast majority are not full colour. It's trivial to find a selection of notable operas he worked on, but if we want to include one or two of him letting loose, to show what he did when working full colour, our options are much, much reduced. I've further reduced this list by removing: Images where the work they're attached to is unknown, images attached to a work where another image is far better - for example, [1] is an image for the Rossini pastiche Robert Bruce - but there's a much more polished image available for the same work, and architectural images for his theatre designs, because frankly, that's a completely different category of work that we should also include, and, finally, partial works - a couple of the images have no real places for people to stand in them, so were probably merely backdrops. They're also to obscure plays. I should note that the works by him stop at around listing 350. After that it was pretty much Cambon-adjacent work, because they list all the people involved with an opera in the description field for an opera.

Other set design options for his article. All are for the première, as far as I'm aware.

  • [2]: Rossini's Robert Bruce - a pastiche made with Rossini's help
  • [3]: (half-finished): Pierre-Louis Dietsch's Le vaisseau fantôme, which is a little hard to research as that's also the French name for Wagner's The Flying Dutchman
  • [4] Les coulisses de la vie, a rather obscure play
  • [5] Adolphe Adam's ballet Le corsaire
  • [6] This one's a little weird. It's Gounod's Faust. That is a really big opera. But it's a tempura painting - the only one by him on Gallica - and stages do not have a portrait orientation. Further, we know what the set looked like. It looked like [7] - and from that, we can see that the painting is a vertical slice of the finished set. I kind of want to include it, but it's so far out there from the rest of his oeuvre, that I'm inclined not to count it in this list.
  • [8] Victor Hugo's Les Burgraves
  • Also, a few other acts of La reine de Chypre, as seen on that page.

I was surprised Adam it wasn't in the article. I think variety of output adds interest. I added, for instance, a watercoour to Eugène Galien-Laloue although he is really known for oils.

I've had a look at the others. From my perspective, Le Corsaire and Faust are very notable, but I'm not sure the works add much value. You probably can't access a copy of the image in Grove, but the very camp premiere poster looks a good candidate for FP if you could get it. The Don Carlos/Verdi image on Getty Images might add some value - it's a bit more colourful than most. In conclusion, I think you might be better with some better known! ps I bit similar to my recent FP Scalloped yellow glider (Cymothoe fumana fumana) female.jpg which illustrates a stub article, so probably wouldn't get FP on Wikipedia. Charlesjsharp (talk) 20:47, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the Don Carlos Getty image is a crop of either [9] or [10], depending on which you're looking at. As you can see, a little misleading as Getty presents it! Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.4% of all FPs 21:45, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
indeed it is! Charlesjsharp (talk) 08:45, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Think I might do Robert Bruce for personal reasons. If La reine in Chypre passes, my next FP after that will be my 500th, and I kind of want something a little significant for that, and as I live in Scotland and have many pleasurable memories of Sterling Castle, that doesn't seem a bad choice. Article isn't perfect, but it's functional enough. And if Chypre doesn't pass, I'll find something else impressive. Also, I've uploaded pretty much everything usable I found to Commons, and put them in articles, so, y'know, Wikipedia improvement! Even if a lot of it's for stubbish articles. I am not touching Le vaisseau fantôme anytime soon, though. Commons:Category:Le vaisseau fantôme is the worst mess of documentation I've seen in a while. Sorry I've been so rambly of late, by the way. Been under low-grade stress for a while. Probably why I've been doing so many restorations - they're kind of therapeutic. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.4% of all FPs 11:00, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it that turtles and tortoises always look so annoyed at being photographed? – Sca (talk) 16:25, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I reckon they look pretty happy! File:Indian tent turtle (Pangshura tentoria tentoria).jpg File:Saharan pond turtle (Mauremys leprosa saharica) female.jpg Charlesjsharp (talk) 16:47, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
