Veljko Lalić is prominent Serbian journalist, editor and publicist.

Lalić is the editor-in-chief and sole owner of Nedeljnik [1], popular and influential news magazine in Serbia. According to Serbia's Commission for Protection of Competition, Nedeljnik accounts for 30 to 40 percent of the circulation of all political and business magazines in the country[2].

Lalić is also the publisher od the Serbian edition of The New York Times [3] the first monthly edition of The New York Times International in its history, as well as Le Monde diplomatique[4], and numerous other publications and books.

Lalić is the author of several books on history, including a Serbian bestseller on Prince Paul and the Coup of March 27th, 1941.[5]

Biography

Veljko Lalić is prominent Serbian journalists. He is the sole owner and editor-in-chief of Nedeljnik, as well as The New York Times International Report, the first monthly edition of The New York Times International. It was originally Nedeljnik's idea, with the internet edition launched in 2018, by Lalić and Mr Michael Greenspon, global head of NYT Licensing & Print Innovation and a member of Sulzberger family, the owners of The New York Times[6].

On the occasion of launching the Serbian edition of Le Monde diplomatique[7], Nedeljnik was congratulated by Mr Noam Chomsky: "I wish to congratulate Nedeljnik on starting the Serbian edition of Le Monde Diplomatique. It is, indeed, one of the few pillars of free thinking in today's world. Unique, invaluable, reliable, LMD is wonderful news for those who hope to understand the world or change it for the better."

Lalić has started up several magazines, including Original magazine, in coopoeration with Novak Djokovic Foundation, aimed at younger people[8].

He is well known Serbian columnist and opinion maker. In 2010, he was awarded the traditional prize The Man of the Year, in the category "Columnist of the year"[9].

In a traditional poll by Blic, the Serbian daily newspaper, owned by Ringier Axel Springer, Lalić has been listed in 300 most powerful people in Serbia, and among 50 most powerful in the media[10].

He's interviewed many Serbian politicians, scholars and intellectuals, as well as several world famous thinkers. He talked to Julian Assange while the WikiLeaks owner was incarcarated in London [11], he spoke to Professor Francis Fukuyama for Fukuyama's first interview during the coronavirus pandemic[12], he was the last journalist to speak to one of the most prominent Serbian writers and intellectuals, Mr Dobrica Ćosić [13], and a very popular interview with Vlade Divac, in which former basketball star announced he was leaving Serbia for good[14].

But he cut his teeth and left a mark on Serbian journalism first and foremost as a reporter - he won the Grand Prix on the International media festival Interfer, for his reportage from the North pole [15] - and as a columnist, with his regular opinion piece in Nedeljnik often being featured throughout the regional media[16].

After Lalić received the Aleksandar Tijanić Award, for journalistic bravery [17], Dragoljub Draža Petrović, the editor-in-chief of independent daily newspaper Danas, published an article on Lalić "The Protector of Journalism". He wrote, among other things: "The exclusive interviews are the trademark of Lalić's media outlet, which consists of coveted goalscorers of Serbia's national journalism team. They gather around the Madera restaurant every Thursday, to show us mortals how to make a good newspaper."

Correspondents of Nedeljnik are some of the famous Serbian and regional journalists, like Darko Hudelist from Zagreb, Croatia, Zoran Panović, Ljiljana Smajlović, writer Srđan Valjarević, Dragoljub Draža Petrović, Čedomir Antić, Predrag J. Marković, Muharem Bazdulj, Danilo Mandic etc.

Lalić received a master's degree in journalism from the University of Belgrade, for his work on the Yugoslav coup d'état, the source material for the subsequent book. He also specialized on the Faculty of Political Science. He studied journalism and philosophy[18].

Lalić is a prominent public figure, often featured in the important TV programmes [19], and got his acting debut - playing himself - in the popular Serbian TV show "Žigosani u reketu"[20].

The Award for Journalistic Bravery and helping the attacked colleague

The editor-in-chief of Nedeljnik won the Aleksandar Tijanić Award for journalistic bravery in 2018, awarded by the Journalists' Association of Serbia, for fighting spirit in journalism. Lalić sent the entire financial part of the award, 2,000 euros, to Milan Jovanović, a local journalists whose house was burned down by the mayor of a suburban municipality of Grocka, Belgrade, in a vicious retribution because of Jovanović's reporting.

"Lalić has shown, in the past few years, that a political magazine can come back big time, to revive the print market, while respecting the journalism ethics and the Code of journalism, with brave editorial policy and modern journalistic language", said the jury, who voted unanimously[21].

The jury continued: "... this media (counter)revolution was mainly conveyed by Lalić, one of the heroes of the last decade of Serbian journalism, who proved that Guthenberg isn't losing this game to Wi-Fi", and that "Lalić is a disciple of an old-school philosophy, the one that Tijanić stood for: intriguing, fierce and witty style, that makes a reader wonder and respect the journalist[22].

Lalić donated the financial part of the award of 2,000 euros, to Milan Jovanović, a local journalist from Vrčin whose house was burned down[23].

He said that he wanted to help Jovanović, but also to draw attention to the struggle of local journalists.

"Our colleagues in smaller cities have it harder than us in the mainstream media. We will never forget the tragic case of Milan Pantić, my dear colleague from Večernje novosti, whose killers still haven't been found. I had hoped that we would never be in a similar situation again, but two days ago, it could have happened in Vrčin. I don't care if someone's formally a journalist or not, because even journalists from the big media outlets can have personal problems of their own, but I stay adamant that there is no worse thing for democracy and freedom in a society than attacking someone because of what that person wrote. I am calling the police to find the attackers on Milan Jovanović and his wife immediately, but also to crack the case of Milan Pantić", Lalić said[24].

Surveillance and other pressure

In February 2020, after Serbia's then Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin commented on an article "by Mr Dragan Sutanovac in Nedeljnik" that has never been published by the newspaper, the Serbian public reacted and called out for the investigation.

How Vulin had the access to private email correspondence between Lalić and Šutanovac, was Nedeljnik under surveillance - those were the most pressing issues of this case[25].

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called out on the Serbian authorities to investigate the possibility that the government spied on and intercepted emails between an opposition politician and the independent weekly Nedeljnik. The investigation's findings must be made public, RSF said[26].

"We are concerned that emails between opposition politicians and independent media outlets are being spied on and intercepted by the government," RSF editor-in-chief Pauline Adčs-Mével said. "We call on the authorities to shed all possible light on this matter." Nedeljnik wanted a separate and independent Commision that would find out the truth[27].

Just a few months before, and at the height of the affair of smuggling of Serbian weapons, the private company GIM sent out threating letters to editors of Nedeljnik, NIN and Danas. Veljko Lalić called it "amateur": "They think we can't read the laws that they're talking about. They think it's alright to quote Article 4 on the Protection of Business Secrets Law, but entirely omit Article 9, which clearly states that it can't be applicable to this case", Lalić said[28].

During the "Vulin Affair", Nedeljnik was hit by a lawsuit from the Ministry of Culture, because of alleged disclosure of the identity of a minor. Journalists' Association of Serbia had promptly asked the Ministry to drop the lawsuit, saying that the article in question was actually the example of proper reporting[29]. Veljko Lalić said that he refutes this latest attack on Nedeljnik[30].

Books

Prince Paul: The Truth About March 27th[39] A history bestseller, sold in more than 30,000 copies, was published in 2008 by the historian Miodrag Janković and journalist Veljko Lalić. The book was based on 12,000 newly found documents from the Columbia University.

Journalist Ilija Rapajić wrote about the book in Politika, Serbia's newspaper-of-record: "It's been now 18 years since, thanks to the almost mythical devotion of Princess Elizabeth Karađorđević to her father Prince Paul, the Iron Curtain that covered the truth of the Yugoslav Coup d'etat started to break. It was because of her that 12,000 mostly unknown documents, that Prince Paul left to Columbia University of New York - his only condition was that they can't be used as long as communists are in power in Yugoslavia - finally got transferred to Serbia. Historian Miodrag Janković and journalist Veljko Lalić have conducted a splendid analysis of these documents for their book 'The Truth About March 27th', published in record circulation of 30,000 copies, with the first edition now out of print, and the second one on its way. This is the most thorough study of the documents regarding the March 27th. The authors argue, in a completely justified way, that a group of irresponsible politicans, foreign mercenaries and ambitious soldiers sacrificed their country and their people in the interests of the great powers. [40]

Knez Pavle: Samoubistvo Jugoslavije - Prince Paul: The Suicide of Yugoslavia[41], circulation 20,000 copies.

Milan Stojadinović: Ekonomski reformator ili profašistički premijer - Milan Stojadinović: An economic reformer or a pro-fascists Prime Minister? [42], circulation 30,000 copies.

Dragi Jovanović: Život i zločini srpskog Huvera - Dragi Jovanović: The Life and Crimes of Serbia's Hoover[43], circulation 20,000 copies.

Most important columns and polemics

Veljko Lalić is one of the most famous columnists in Serbia. In 2010, he received The Man of the Year award, for columnist of the year, voted by colleagues and public figures[44], and in 2015 the "Dragiša Kašiković" award for distinguished professional, art, and scientific achievement and spreading the freedom of creativity, for his column "The Role of My Family in the World Revolution"[45].

In this particular column[46] Lalić wrote on the occasion of rehabilitation of Draža Mihailović and constant, entrenched divisions in Serbian society, on Chetniks and Partisans. He revealed that one of his grandfathers was one the most famous Montenegrin Chetniks, and that his uncle grandpa, Nikica Prlja, was a bodyguard for Partisan leader Josip Broz Tito, and saved Tito's life during the Battle of Sutjeska.

One of the most important opinion pieces Lalić published was the one about limitation on the mandate of President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Assembly, "Why we need to limit the mandate"[47]. It stirred a lot of interest in Serbian public and was promoted by the opposition leaders, university professors and intellectuals[48].

In another column, Lalić defined the modern Serbia as "Pa šta Srbija" ("So What Serbia")[49]. His other prominent columns include "Kontinent je odsečen" - "The Continent is Cut Off", written in London during Brexit referendum[50], "Đinđićev Kamelot" - "The Camelot of Zoran Đinđić"[51], "Srbi, narod s pogledom na more" - "Serbs, a People Overlooking a Sea"[52].

He also wrote numerous columns on journalism, like "The Post, interes javnosti je važniji od interesa pojedinca" - "The Post: The Interest of Public is More Important than an Interest of an Individual"[53], "Novinari ne smeju da stave šal" - "Journalists Must Not Wear a Scarf"[54], or his polemics with the journalist Ivan Radovanović after the arrest of journalist Ana Lalić[55].

One of the most famous columns is on the legacy of Slobodan Milošević, called "A, ko će ovo da plati" - "So, Who's Gonna Pay For This?"[56].
