NEO: The World Ends with You is an action role-playing game with urban fantasy elements developed by Square Enix for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The game is a sequel to the 2007 game The World Ends With You, specifically it's 2021 anime iteration.[1] It is planned to be released by Square Enix in mid-2021 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. It features a new cast of characters playing the Reapers' Game in Shibuya, and is the first game in the franchise to use three-dimensional graphics. Takeharu Ishimoto, the composer for the original game, though no longer a full time employee of Square Enix, confirmed he will also be composing the music for the sequel.[2]

Story

Setting

The game takes place in a recreated and stylized version of the Shibuya district in Tokyo. Unlike the first game's depiction of Shibuya, places such as Tower Records and Parco keep their names instead of using different ones such as Towa Records and Molco. As with the anime, some of the elements of the game had been modernised for the sequel, such as the use of smartphones rather than earlier flip-style cell phones and the appearance of the game's 104 building matches the current appearance of the real-life Shibuya 109 building.

Characters

The protagonist and player character is known as Rindo, a player in the Reapers' Game. He is accompanied by fellow players Fret and Nagi. Koki Kariya and Sho Minamimoto, two antagonists from the first game, appear in NEO: The World Ends with You, the latter appearing as a party member. Additionally, the game features a character known as Tsugumi Matsunae, who already appeared as an unnamed character in the first game's iOS and Nintendo Switch rereleases.[3]

Development

Reveal

The game was revealed on November 23, 2020, after a week-long countdown on the game's official web page.[4] The reveal coincided with the upload of the anime adaptation's second trailer. Producer Tetsuya Nomura uploaded an illustration featuring Neku Sakuraba and Rindo to the official The World Ends With You Twitter account in celebration, stating that the game will be a sequel to the anime, and that when he designed Rindo he didn't imagine face masks would become a normal occurrence in the world.[5]
