KRBL Limited is an Indian company that produces and exports rice. It is the world's largest rice miller,[1] with its India Gate brand of basmati rice being the largest selling rice brand in India as well as the largest exported basmati rice brand in the world.[2][3][4] The company exports rice to over 80 countries;[5] about 75% of its export revenue comes from the Middle East countries, as of 2018.[6]
History
KRBL was founded in 1889 in Lyallpur by two brothers–Khushi Ram and Behari Lal; the company name is an acronym of their names. It was initially set up as a cotton-spinning business, which had additional areas of interest in banking, textiles and production of rice. After the partition of India, the family settled in Delhi and worked as trade agents of rice and oil in the city's Naya Bazaar area. It became a rice-only business in the 1970s, began exporting rice in 1985 and set up its first rice manufacturing unit in Noida in 1992. It became one of the leading exporters of basmati rice by 1990s and issued its initial public offering in 1995. In 2003, KRBL became the first Indian rice company to receive foreign investment, and three years later, it issued a GDR for US$13 million.[1][7][8]
In 2003, KRBL acquired a 65-acre rice plant near Dhuri for ₹15.8 crore through a court auction. After upgrading the facility at a cost of ₹200 crore, it became the largest rice milling plant in the world. [9][10]
