Realizing Goals (RM; Spanish: Realizando Metas) is a political party in Panama, recognized as such by the Electoral Tribunal of Panama on March 24, 2021.[1] The main leader of the party is the former president of Panama Ricardo Martinelli. The party has 95 416 adherents (July 2021).[2]

History

RM was born from a split in the Democratic Change party, which was founded and directed by Martinelli from 1998 to 2019, when Rómulo Roux took over the leadership of the party after Martinelli's arrest for a case of illegal wiretapping during his government.[3] After the acquittal of the charges in August 2019, Martinelli demanded the renewal of CD's board of directors but was rejected. For this reason, in February 2020, a faction led by Martinelli decided to renounce CD and create its party.[4]

Initially, it was proposed as a "Martinelist Party", but electoral regulations rejected it as it was forbidden to name a party with the name of a living person.[4] Several names were chosen using the initials of the former president Martinelli (RM), with "Realizing Goals" being the most accepted. After collecting the necessary signatures and holding its constitutive convention, the party was officially recognised by the electoral authorities in March 2021.

The party aims to nominate Martinelli as a presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections and seek his second presidential term.[5]
