Vin Gupta (pulmonologist)

Vin Gupta is an American pulmonologist who serves as a medical analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.

Biography

Gupta is a national public health media analyst,[1][2][3] primarily serving as a NBC News and MSNBC medical contributor on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4][5][6] He was briefly under consideration by the Biden administration for the post of United States Surgeon General in 2020.[7][8] He also serves as Senior Principal of Health at Amazon,[9][10] affiliate professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation,[11] and Major in the United States Air Force Medical Reserve Corps.[12]

Education

Gupta attended Princeton University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he received his Doctor of Medicine. He additionally received a Master of Studies in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.[1]

Career

Gupta completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.[1] In 2018, Gupta returned to the University of Washington, assuming a faculty position within the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation with a focus on the global burden of respiratory diseases.[13] CNBC first reported in January 2020 that Gupta had transitioned to a role at Amazon Care.[14]

He currently also serves on the Board of Directors[15] of the Center for Environmental Health and is a Term Member[16] of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Awards

In November 2021, Gupta was selected as one of the "most influential people of 2021"[17] by Seattle Magazine.[18]
