Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a 2017 kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo. It was released worldwide on April 28, 2017. An enhanced re-release of Mario Kart 8, it was well-received with critics generally praising the enhancements while criticizing its "Smart Steering" and online modes. Metacritic gave it a 92/100 indicating "Universal acclaim".

Reception

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has received mostly positive reviews. According to review aggregator Metacritic, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe received an average score of 92/100, indicating "Universal acclaim".[3]

Writing for IGN, Jose Ostero gave the upgrade a 9.3 out of 10. While he found the game's new "Smart Steering" mode the "one oddly executed addition" due to it being enabled by default with no "immediately clear" way to turn it off, he otherwise praised other aspects of the game such as the graphics which he found to be "just as amazing in 2017 as it was in 2014". Ostero also enjoyed the overhauled Battle mode and singled out the "Renegade Roundup" mode as being "genuinely thrilling". He gave brief mention to the new 200cc racing mode, referring to it as a "neat extra". Less positive comments were directed at the game's "still barebones" battle mode. While he enjoyed changes such as the reduced time it takes to enter a game and the added ability to change karts and characters between races, he panned the requirement of external devices such as a smartphone to chat with friends.[4]

In his review for Nintendo Life, Thomas Whitehead gave Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 10/10 stars, praising the amount of content and the resolution bump from 720p to 1080p, calling it a "beautiful" game citing it's lack of any "real" anti-aliasing. He also enjoyed the game's "HD cartoony" look that "really pops" here. The amount of content was similarly praised. Although Whitehead felt a "slight tinge of regret" that the "chase for unlocks was limited" he nonetheless called the package "fantastic", calling the time trials "fun".[5]
