Sketch of Yoko Tsuno

Yoko Tsuno is an comic book series created by the Belgian writer Roger Leloup. It's about an female electrical engineer of Japanese origin and her friends. The stories are heavily technology driven, with concepts like robot dragons (The dragon of Hong-Kong), suspended animation (The border of life), time travel (The timespiral and others), and even an alien species called the Vineans. Despite the often exotic settings the stories remain very realistic and friendship is one of the key themes of the series. It is drawn in Ligne claire style.

Setting

The main characters are based in Belgium, although adventures take place around the world and even in the Vinean solar system, 3,000,000 light years away. Most of the stories evolve around 3 key characters:

  • Yoko Tsuno: She is an extremely intelligent electrical engineer, who was raised in Japan but now lives in Belgium.
  • Ben Beeld: He has a strong personality, best friend of Yoko
  • Paul Pola: He is the clown of the trio. In one scene, he burned a food can on a fire, while waiting to be picked up by Vineans.

There also are a large number of supporting characters, including such exotic personalities as aliens and people from the future and past.
