Vladimir State University (Russian: Владимирский государственный университет) is a public university located in Vladimir, Russia.[1] It was founded in 1958.[2]

History

On August 1, 1958, the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR decreed to open Vladimir branch of the Moscow Evening Institute of Mechanical Engineering with two faculties: mechanical-technological and instrument-making. The first intake of students - 200 people - was carried out. In 1962 Vladimir branch due to liquidation of Moscow evening machine-building institute was transferred under jurisdiction of Moscow institute of electronic engineering.

On February 8, 1964, Vladimir evening polytechnic institute with day-time, evening and correspondence forms of training was organized on the basis of Moscow Institute of Electronic Engineering. In the structure of the Institute were established 14 departments and 5 faculties. In May 1967 was created the Institute research sector. The Institute began to carry out scientific research on the orders of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the branch departments.

Since September 1, 1978 a new speciality "Electronic computer machines" had been introduced at the institute. Computer equipment, technical means of education and control were introduced actively into the educational process. By 1981 the institute had 23 computers. The Computer laboratory was organized at the department of computer engineering. In 1976 the institute's student design bureau was organized. By 1980 the student's design office had six departments and two branches of the institute, which united about 500 students.

In 1978 foreign students came to the Institute for the first time. In 1979 the Dean's Office for international students was established. the contingent of international students grew to 196 people. In 1989 contacts with the Southern Illinois University in the USA became traditional and longstanding.[3]

In 1993 Vladimir Polytechnic Institute was transferred to the highest hierarchical level of university and got a status of State Technical University (VSTU). On December 30, 1996, the university received the status of a classical university.

On January, 24th 1997 the university dropped the word "technical" from its name. Becoming a classical university did not mean reduction of technical specialities, on the contrary, it was developed on the higher level on the basis of university courses of fundamental sciences. On February 21, 2002, on 10 session of Eurasian Association of Universities the university was approved in the status of full member of Eurasian Association of Universities. In 2008 Vladimir State University was awarded an honorary title of honorary name of Alexander Grigorievich and Nikolay Grigorievich Stoletov.

Since its inception, the university has trained over 60,000 specialists. VlSU cooperates with more than 40 universities worldwide, and has more than 30 educational and training centers.[4]
