Copy and paste moves of articles

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Vodafone Ghana Music Awards a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Ghana Music Awards. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Storchy (talk) 10:30, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Storchy: I wasn't expecting or making sort of a history merge, copy-and-paste editing or page move, but since you brought this up, let me clarify for you what I did so we'll be on the same wavelength:

1: According to the WP recentism essay/policy, the proper name for the topic I worked on is "Ghana Music Awards", but most African Wikipedians, especially the Ghanaian ones, would disagree with me as it currently has and named with a sponsor (Vodafone). This essay/policy seeks to combine a topic's history with its present (and maybe its near future). That was the sole reason I brought the info of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards to Ghana Music Awards and made the former a redirect on grounds of it being its sponsored or alternative name. Examples of my point here include\e the former Barclays Premier League (which redirects to Premier League as it was its sponsored/alternative name) and Carabao Cup/Carling Cup (which redirects to EFL Cup for the same reason).

2: The user who chose to move the information of "Ghana Music Awards" to "Vodafone Ghana Music Awards" solely because it is the current common name and is headline-sponsored clearly forgot these policies you've giving me (Copying within Wikipedia, Page history merging and Copy-and-paste editing) and nothing has been done about this since then. I'll attempt requesting this merging there - but I have my doubts and self-trust that it won't go too well.

In a nutshell, the recentism essay/policy and the redirections from sponsored/alternative names of topics made me to get the info to the article/page I feel it truly belongs here on WP. Thanks for notifying me on this and I'll work on that pending IP-block lifts and free time changes. Thanks!! Pannra (talk) 16:25, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdrqaz: If I make a requested move, it may be illegal here on WP, as it is already a redirect. I just want the sponsored title to be like the clean unsponsored title like the other arcticle titles. Just why did the user move it to its sponsored name when he should know it ain't accepted here on WP?!? Pannra (talk) 01:28, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pannra, it is not illegal. We regularly have requested moves where the target is already a redirect. I have told you that you should make a requested move, so that other Wikipedians can weigh in on the matter. There are instructions here telling you how you can create one. Sdrqaz (talk) 02:01, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No concensus still, I want to move this now!!

[edit]

So I put the requested move to an non-sponsored title on WP but still no consensus. It's like when I paste/discuss/complain at the appropriate pages (History merge requests, Requested moves and the fending off of cut/copy-and-paste method), my actions are rather reverted and unupdated. What should I do? Pannra (talk) 08:07, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That is not a requested move. As I told you above, there are instructions here on how to do them. As written at my first link, requested moves usually take at least a week, and often more. You need to be more patient. Sdrqaz (talk) 13:02, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello & VGMA

[edit]

Hello Pannra, I noticed your message on the talk page of the VGMA (Vodafone Ghana Music Awards). I agree based on your logic, however have you put in a request yet for it to be moved? Ampimd (talk) 20:00, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ampimd: Sorry if I took long with my reply as I'm replying to you with a WP-bot blocked mobile network operator's IP address. You see, I really didn't like that user's action to move the history-based name of "Ghana Music Awards" to that name. I did about 5 requested moves only for them to be either removed or get replies that the redirect to "VGMA" is correct. I was simply following the WP recentism policy with what I did - that's all!! Pannra (talk) 13:03, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out eventually though, What processes did you use in requesting for the move? Did you just move the content or what exactly did you do?
It is possible the method you used was not the right method, so kindly let me know what processes you used so I can further find out how best to work on a possible move? Ampimd (talk) 14:04, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ampimd: What I meant when I wrote "requesting for the move" 5 times for that page IS using the WP:RM link. I went through that only for the "starter" 3 to be deleted from the "active requests" section of that WP:RM link without any action and the latter 2 to be discarded with "everyone" (by that language, I would assume "Ghanaian and Sub-Saharan African Wikipedians") being satisfied with "VGMA".
So, that's for the process(es) I used; I did move the content before using the WP:RM link to that "Ghana Music Awards" page, however if you check on my talk page before this section in which you added your concern, you'd see Storchy sent me a caution about preserving the edit history of both pages which he/she says "strengthens the fending off of WP's copyright issues". I don't blame him/her – but rather that user who moved the page because of "the current name" of the topic, which doesn't satisfy the WP recentism policy. So that's what I did!! Pannra (talk) 04:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did not write what you claim I wrote. See above for what I wrote. Looking at Special:Contributions/Pannra, you have made no edits at WP:RM. I suggest you take User:Sdrqaz and User:Ampimd's advice. Storchy (talk) 05:12, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No wonder "Diffs" are so important here on WP - and I didn't make one or more for you for proof! For correction, I said Ghanaian and African Wikipedians alike - and I'm seriously sure you aren't one of or among them. My contributions page may contain suppressed/oversighted snippets of those requests I mentioned - and now I know why this is happening. I'm rather re-contesting what you said already on this very page that I haven't invoke any requested move. I wish that since Sdrqaz is an admin, he/she consults with the other admins to see whether they may have some suppressed revisions of the requested moves page to see my request under the "New Requests" section and prove that I am right the whole time!
No surprise you're replying to me that I've done nothing about this myself, when actually I have! But for fear of being indefinitely blocked for a potential PA, I'll bother less about this and try again. And this time, I'll make diffs and show you in my next reply that I have. I can now see why lots and lots of users get unknowingly blocked indefinitely because they had this sort of instance with no reply then it/they ends/end up as potential PAs. Pannra (talk) 10:11, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You do not have deleted or suppressed edits. Any administrator can verify the first part, and I have spoken to an Oversighter who has told me the second. You have not made any requested moves. As I've told you twice now (1 April and 4 April), there are instructions at WP:RSPM on how to make one. You have opened a discussion here on the article's name, but have not done a proper requested move. Please go to Talk:Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and follow the instructions listed at WP:RSPM. Sdrqaz (talk) 10:37, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sdrqaz, Storchy & Ampimd: I've finally done this RM/RSPM you said I do after riding through caught IP blocks!! Let's see if I'll get my justice for this uncalled-for move!! Regards!! Pannra (talk) 15:33, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
