Arthur Conan Doyle

You removed my edit on Conan Doyle's page, I edited it as he is Scottish, as he was born in Scotland as stated on his page, you removed this edit, why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faceitengland (talkcontribs) 14:23, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Faceitengland, is there a scottish passport, is Scotland a separate state? Regards --Serols (talk) 14:27, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So why do some pages say Scottish, some say English? and the other say British? Faceitengland (talk) 14:29, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Shakespeare for example, is English, either edit that, or Doyle is Scottish Faceitengland (talk) 14:31, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please explain? Nationality is the correct designation? For who/what? As you said for Scotland, England doesn't have a passport, nor is it a separate state, so Shakespeare is by accounts British then. Faceitengland (talk) 14:36, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For your information...

Thanks for reverting vandalism on Wikipedia! However, I'd like to bring up something that I believe we talked about years ago. Someone vandalized the Brontosaurus article, which I reverted. I was going to leave a warning on the vandal's talk page, but I got an edit conflict notice and found out that you warned the user. It must have happened because I edit-conflicted you, but as you're a Huggle user, the program went on warning the person anyway. It's OK if you don't have any control over it; just thought I'd let you know. Keep fighting those vandals! --LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony Fan) 18:07, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello LPS and MLP Fan, the warning was initiated by me and not automatically. In the last few weeks, users have appeared again and again, who have actively participated in combating vandalism, but have not left any warnings with the relevant IPs/users. As a result, they could vandalise for hours. With Huggle you can immediately see if a user has been warned, if not, you can generate the warning. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the fact that you were the one, who had initiated the revert and are making the warning manually and not automatically, which takes a little longer. You know what you're doing, so I want to apologize for taking the warning off you. Best wishes --Serols (talk) 14:15, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see now. No worries, and happy editing! LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony Fan) 17:21, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wealthiest Historical Figures

Hello, I am trying to fix inaccurate claims on the page listing the wealthiest historical figures. Can you explain why you keep on reverting my changes?

Hello GaloisCategories, you know what the word historical means? --Serols (talk) 11:16, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well I would say that it is a bit ambiguous when something becomes historical. One could argue that anything in the past (such as elon musk reaching a net worth of 340.4 billion dollars on november 4th) is a historical event. However, I can understand that there is some grey area of how the word 'historical' might be interpreted. The issue is that when someone searches 'richest ever person' into google, this is the first article that appears. As a result, I think it is misleading to not list currently alive people who are richer than anyone who has ever lived in the past. GaloisCategories (talk) 11:39, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello GaloisCategories, then we wait until there is a consensus on the article talk page. --Serols (talk) 11:45, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is already concensus on the talk page that the article is inaccurate, and needs to be updated with current information. GaloisCategories (talk) 11:54, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello GaloisCategories, the word historical is actually clearly defined. --Serols (talk) 11:57, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed it is. According to google, 'historical' means "of or concerning history or past events". In other words, something that occurred on the 4th of November 2021 is historical. GaloisCategories (talk) 12:16, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I fixed a spelling mistake and you immediately remove it and post something on my talk page. OK, we don’t agree about spelling. But why put crap on so much talk page as though I did something wrong just because I don’t agree with your opinion on spelling? Hi Serols, that persistent disruptive editing person who has been blocked many times using different ip addresses over the past few years is back again, up 2603.6011.DF01 his last edit was the Jersey City Fire Department which I fixed. Doublure (bookbinding)

Hi Serols, I noticed that a week or two ago you undid some edits by User:Wooster12 in which they added links to the British Library's bookbindings database and manuscripts library. In doing so the edits were characterised as 'advertising/promotion' and I was wondering if you had a moment to go over the reason for that conclusion? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 10:04, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Richard Nevell (WMUK), the entries did not correspond to the rules of Wikipedia:Weblinks, no links in the flowtext. Regards --Serols (talk) 10:51, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Serols By 'flowtext' do you mean 'External links normally should not be placed in the body of an article'? If so, that was indeed the case for most of those edits, though not all. Perhaps it would be appropriate to add them to the external links section rather than as links in the body of the article, since they were contextually appropriate and direct readers to useful information? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:27, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Richard Nevell (WMUK), this was a text link and this is not allowed, see Wikipedia:Weblinks. Regards --Serols (talk) 13:39, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Serols This sounds like an issue with formatting rather than promotion or advertising. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:41, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Richard Nevell (WMUK), text links are promotion or advertising, therefore not allowed. Regards --Serols (talk) 13:45, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then it would be fine if the links were added as references or to the external links section? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:52, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Richard Nevell (WMUK), as references or to the external links section, Paper marbling only as reference, maximum Weblinks are five links. Regards --Serols (talk) 15:34, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Serols While I endorse the principle that the number of links in external links sections should be kept to a minimum (per WP:ELPOINTS) so that they constitute a curated list which is valuable to readers, the guideline does not seem to specify a maximum. I will advise the user concerned that the links can be re-added as references or to external links sections as appropriate. It is clear that the links were useful to readers, albeit the formatting could have been different.
I would also add that leaving three messages on the user's talk page in the space of a minute may have been a bit excessive. In future, it might be worth waiting to see if the first message has an effect before issuing further ones. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 16:22, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Richard Nevell (WMUK), the messeges were correct, because there was a risk that the user would continue. The links weren't really an added value either, as the weblinks/references contain better examples. Only the article Queens' Binder would be a link in the correct formatting ok. --Serols (talk) 15:41, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The suggestion that explicitly linking to an item mentioned in an article as was the case with doublure isn't adding value is a curious one. Considering the editor in question had not edited since your initial message, subsequent ones were excessive and could have been off-putting. I appreciate that you look at hundreds of edits a day using Huggle, but please keep in mind that more haste and less speed may be helpful in some situations. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 08:25, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Richard Nevell (WMUK), since I don't have a crystal ball and can't see into the future, I can only access my experience. So I'm assuming the user will continue. The user can ask me at any time where the problem with his editing was. Everyone gets an explanation from me and also the appropriate help.
There are thousands of vandalism edits on Wikipedia every day, in some cases more than 10,000. There is even a program running in the background to deal with this onslaught. I invite you to help Wikipedia fight against vandalism. You'll quickly see, why it's so important, comply with the Wikipedia rules.
Another friendly note: Please get straight to the point in the future, what you want to get at. Question games are not for everyone and not everyone is as understanding as me.
And please start a new section on any talk page in the future and don't use an existing one like you did here. That makes no sense.
The "new section" tab on article talk pages (here, The weather in London) lets you start a new section.
I think everything has been said and hereby close the discussion. Have a nice weekend. Regards --Serols (talk) 14:21, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cybersecurity article

Hello, you reverted a change I made for creating a separate article for cybersecurity. The rational behind this was in the article and now I brought it back to the talk section of cybersecurity article, but briefly it is:

Currently cybersecurity redirects to Computer Security, but nowadays it goes beyond computed security and is related to protecting things that depends on Information and Communication technology and that could have impacts where in the digital or the physical world.

could you consider this?

Non-great revert on Finland-NATO relations

Hi - at [1] you reverted an IP. It wasn't a great edit by any means (and I reverted the IP again when they tried to make it again), but I definitely don't think it was disruptive editing, since there actually is a there there (Denmark pre-ratifying the protocol could well be worthy of mention, but it's not ratification and the tweet is unusable as a source). You do a lot of good work fighting vandalism and it's appreciated, but please be careful with the use of powerful tools so that good-faith contributors aren't being cut by them. FrankSpheres (talk) 16:58, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello FrankSpheres, please note Wikipedia:Weblinks no social links. And the IP didn't get a warning either, it was just a revert. So I can't understand your comment. Regards --Serols (talk) 17:17, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's the edit summary, the substantive part of which is 'disruptive edits', and that there was no attempt to communicate with the IP about why they got reverted and what would make the edit stick. That's really not a great experience for a new contributor. FrankSpheres (talk) 17:29, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
FrankSpheres social links are disruptive. --Serols (talk) 17:39, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's not right. There are several cases where tweets can be perfectly valid sources and not in the least disruptive. First, as a self-published primary source (e.g., uncontroversial claims about a BLP sourced to the subject's own Twitter), as described by WP:TWEET. Second, reliable or official sources can publish on Twitter (e.g., in the article in question, Finland-NATO relations, there's a citation of a statement posted to the official Twitter account of the President of Finland, which is absolutely fine; another example could be a newspaper's official Twitter account). Third, where the tweet itself is being discussed (e.g., on dril), linking to it obviously makes sense. There are probably other cases too. Links to social media aren't fundamentally different to links to any random website and aren't innately disruptive. FrankSpheres (talk) 17:54, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
FrankSpheres, Wikipedia:External_links#Links_normally_to_be_avoided -> 10. --Serols (talk) 18:03, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That page is specifically talking about external links included for their value as resources related to the article (typically in the 'External links' section), and not for links used as citations or references. See point 1 of the same page under 'Important points to remember'. The edit in question clearly meant to use the tweet as a source. FrankSpheres (talk) 18:10, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
FrankSpheres, twitter links are only to be used in special cases and that is absolutely not the case with this topic. The link was nonsense and you know that too, see your comment on the IP talk page. But I find it very positive that you stand up for another user. I think everything has been said and hereby close the discussion. Have a nice week. Regards --Serols (talk) 17:30, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cline surname page

Why is it the German origin of the name is the only one allowed to be posted with no more citation than the Irish origin? Seems like someone is trying edit the surname history to their own narrative. I barely know how to navigate wikipedia let alone engage in "edit warring". I just want the page to have accurate and complete information. 104.184.173.159 (talk) 12:58, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
