New Jeans is the debut extended play by South Korean girl group Newjeans. It was released digitally on August 1, 2022 and will be released physically on August 8, 2022 by ADOR, and contains four tracks in which 3 of them are lead singles.

Background

In early 2019, Big Hit Entertainment (now known as Hybe Corporation) announced preparations to debut a new girl group under the direction of Min Hee-jin, who joined the company as CBO that same year and is widely credited for being the former visual director at SM Entertainment.[1][2] Dubbed "Min Hee-jin's Girl Group" by media outlets, they were originally scheduled to debut in 2021 as a joint project between Big Hit and Source Music, but it was later postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was transferred to Hybe's recently established independent record label ADOR where Min is CEO.[3] After two global auditions and preparations,[4] the lineup was finalized in March 2022 and the debut was later revealed to take place in August.[5][6]

Release

ADOR teased the launch of their new girl group on July 1, 2022, by posting three animated videos of the numbers "22", "7", and "22" on their social media accounts, raising the possibility that the first group content would be released on July 22.[7][8][9] As a surprise release, on July 22, the quintet released the music video for their debut single "Attention" with no preceding promotion or details on who the members are.[10][11] The video received more than 1.3 million views in less than 24 hours, and it was swiftly followed by the announcement of their debut self-titled extended play, which included four tracks, including two additional singles.[12] The pre-orders for the album began on July 25.[13] On July 23, the group released the second single "Hype Boy" and it was accompanied by a 50-second clip revealing the members and had four different music videos specific to each member.[14] A music video for their B-side "Hurt" was released two days later.[15] The album was released digitally on August 1, 2022 and is set to release physically on August 8, 2022.

Composition

The EP has been described as a brand of pop with elements of moombahton, electropop and hip hop which, according to ADOR, is "easy listening anywhere, anytime and has been produced in a way that focuses on the members' voices without over-engineering sound".[16]

Songs

"Attention" has been described as a song with a groovy Je ne sais quoi highlighted by a bustling beat, as the song confidently boasts its thrilling feeling through key changes that jump between major and minor. The track is written by one of the NewJeans members, Danielle.[17] "Hype Boy" is a moombahton/electropop mash-up, that puts the members’ distinct vocals front and center. It was also written by one of the NewJeans members, Hanni. "Cookie" is described as an minimal hip hop beat track with lyrics showing oddly endearing self-assurance—with a hint of tension and dance-pop with fat synths and a twist on the Jersey club sound. "Hurt" is described as a sad, R&B track backed by groovy drums and smooth, bittersweet vocals, which gives the impression the members are performing a cappella.[18]

Commercial performance

On July 28, it was announced that pre-orders of New Jeans had exceeded 444,000 copies and is considered as the highest number of stock pre-orders achieved by any girl group debut album in history.[19]

Promotion

Following the release of New Jeans, Newjeans held a live countdown on YouTube on the same day to introduce the extended play and communicate with their fans.[20]
