National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM), or in its full name Chaudhary Charan Singh National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (CCS NIAM), is a research and higher-education institute operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare of India and focusing on agricultural marketing. Established in 1988, it is located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.[2] Chaudhary Charan Singh National Institute of Agricultural Marketing has been serving the farming community for over three decades. CCS NIAM was set up to strengthen agricultural marketing in India and Southeast Asian countries. The institute is mandated to address the challenges faced in the area of agricultural marketing and to strengthen Agri-Business by way of continuously imparting research, quality training, consultancy, policy advocacy, and education to numerous different stakeholders.


Training


CCS NIAM reaches out to the vast array of stakeholders across the country and Southeast Asia through its well-designed training programs like:

  1. Banner Programmes: They are flagship programs of CCS NIAM organized in partnership with reputed organizations such as National Institutes, Agricultural Universities, and SAMITs in different states. The programs are focused on addressing marketing issues around a state-specific dominant crop or sector.
  2. Krishi Gyan Deep Knowledge Series lectures: They are aimed at absorbing and disseminating the most successful experiences in agricultural marketing and related themes to all the important stakeholders in the country.
  3. National Facilitator Development Programme: It aims to develop well-trained professionals working in different parts of the country for various organizations, available to CCS NIAM for carrying out academic activities whenever required.
  4. After the government implemented an electronic trading portal for transparent sale transactions and price discovery for agricultural commodities in the APMCs across the country, CCS NIAM started a center for ICT and E-NAM to provide training and research in the field of ICT application in agricultural marketing, owing to government’s focus on E-agriculture for enhancement of agricultural profitability through improved information and communication processes.


The beneficiaries of the institution’s training programs range from Agricultural Marketing Department officials, scientific institutions, tribal farmers, Agri-business institutions & students, Commodity Boards, Institute of Cooperative Management, FPOs, Agriculture and line departments, Agri start-ups, partner institutions, National institutions, Agricultural Universities, ICAR Institutes, cooperatives, Agripreneurs, Traders, Commission agents, Mandi secretaries, processors, industry associations to warehousing agencies &Agri-logistics operators.


Research


CCS NIAM indulges in various agri-Business oriented research activities like:

  1. Kisan Business School: It is NIAM’s initiative for enhancing farmers’ income by action research. KBS aims to educate farmers on modern production, processing, and marketing activities to inflate their income. Commodity-specific knowledge and skills are imparted to farmers by expert institutions in all critical stages. KBS research focuses on commodities like wheat, maize, fish, poultry, and dairy. 5 Kisan business schools have been initiated and are in progress.
  2. Research Project in Partnership with DST-CAZRI: Research project titled “enhancing Food and Water Security in Arid region through improved understanding of quantity, quality, and management of blue, green, and greywater” Aims to build the capacity of farmers and community to watershed areas for better marketing practices and opportunities for better livelihood.
  3. Other research and project development works have been undertaken through Research Internship Programs, empirical research in the areas relating to medicinal plants, marketing strategy for agricultural produce, Functioning of National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) & study on the reach of AGMARKNET to farmers, Storage Logistics System, extension activities in agricultural marketing.


Consultancy


Various consultancy services provided by CCS NIAM for decision-makers in public and private sectors in agricultural marketing are as follows:

  1. Awareness programs among farmers and members of FPOs under the Agriculture Market Infrastructure Scheme by MoA & FW, GoI.  
  2. Programs for farmers and officials of arid zone sponsored by the National Rainfed Agriculture Authority, GoI.
  3. CCS NIAM has also been previously recognized as Knowledge Partner in a project providing daily and weekly agricultural marketing intelligence and intervention strategies for more than 50 commodities to agricultural marketing, department, Govt. Andhra Pradesh.


Start-up Agri-Business Incubation Programme under RKVY-RAFTAAR.


CCS NIAM- Centre for Innovation Entrepreneurship and Skill Development, Jaipur is acting as a “Knowledge Partner” for MoA & FW to implement Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana- Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvenation (RKVY-RAFTAAR). The Institute established NIAM Agri-Business Incubator (NABI) in January 2019 to provide hand holding and incubation support to RKVY-RAFTAAR Agri-Business Incubators (R-ABIs) situated in 5 states in the country. National Rice Research Institute (Odisha), Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture University (Rajasthan), Indian Institute of Technology (West Bengal), and Bihar Agriculture University (Bihar).

NIAM Agri-Business Incubator (NABI) is facilitating existing and budding Agripreneures, Agri-Business ventures, enterprises, and start-ups through handholding through expert advice, hands-on training cum internship, industrial attachments, market surveys, dedicated mentorship, financing, exposure to existing incubation centers and start-up ecosystem as a one-stop solution to refine their business ideas and establish their start-ups through various programs like:

Education


CCS NIAM has also been contributing to the preparation of young managers and professionals through Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Agri-business Management) for the last two decades. PGDM (ABM) is a 2-year residential program accredited by AICTE. The program develops techno-managerial competence among the students and helps them win laurels in various walks of agri-business. The programme is approved by AICTE for agriculture and allied graduates. The institute extends an extensive list of courses. Bestrewn with 119 credits, the curriculum consists of 36 core courses, 4 electives, and 3 projects covered over two years. The constant review ensures that the courses are both contemporary and pertinent. The PGDM (ABM) course is an amalgamation of core courses, electives, seminars, and industry interaction. With more than 30 visiting faculties affiliated with top National and International B-Schools, CCS NIAM customizes the educational experience by maintaining a sound student-to-faculty ratio. A small group learning environment is encouraged, and the faculty and students share an excellent rapport. CCS NIAM ventured into PGDM (ABM) in 2001, starting with not more than 25 students, but with continuous zeal and a result-oriented approach, the number raised to 60 plus students, comprising more than one-third of female students. Priding in its diverse environment, the institute caters to students from all over the country. CCS NIAM is a place with an array of culture-oriented activities from north to south, east to west, that celebrates unity in diversity.

CCS NIAM enjoys a colossal alumni base of 20 batches encompassing 800 plus individuals. The institute's alumni presence is seen across the spectrum of sectors, with positions as high as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). To rake in the benefit of such abundant experience, CCS NIAM came up with alumni guest lecture series: SAMVIDH, giving a platform for students to interact with the alumni and gain corporate knowledge.

Since its inception, CCS NIAM has enjoyed 100% placement. There are more than 150 companies that recruit from CCS NIAM, and every year adds to the number of first-time recruiters. This year PGDM (ABM) batch 20-22 brought in 32 recruiters, out of which 14 were first-time recruiters. With an average package of 10.15 LPA and the highest package of 14 LPA, CCS NIAM is scoring new heights. With companies such as Adani Wilmar, ADM, BASF, Bayer crop science, and so forth recruiting from the institute, the sky is the limit.

CCS NIAM also focuses on the comprehensive development of students via extracurricular activities. AGROVON is the biggest festival of CCS NIAM, sponsored by various esteemed companies. It provides a platform for budding managers to explore their skills. This three-day flagship event with the theme “Sow ideas, water hopes, reap miracles” attracted 4500+ participants from esteemed National & International B- Schools.


International Projects


Indo-German Cooperation in Agriculture Market Development

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of the Government of India and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Germany established a bilateral cooperation project to support agriculture market development in India on August 5th, 2021, where NIAM emerged as an important implementation partner. The project is intended to be implemented over a period of 36-months with a specific aim to contribute to the sustainable economic growth of India’s agricultural sector and improve livelihoods in rural regions.  

The project’s goal is to support India’s strategy for modernizing agricultural markets through the achievement of three main results, namely:

  1. Establishment of a dialogue platform on agricultural market development.
  2. Strengthened capacities of government institutions and other relevant actors aimed at improving the Indian agricultural marketing system.
  3. Farmer organizations integrated into sustainable, market-based value chains.

The total budget available to support project implementation over the three years is Euro 1.775 million (equivalent to approximately 154 million Indian Rupees), provided as a grant by the German Government. The main outcomes to be achieved with the support of the project are anticipated to include:

  1. Improvements in the agriculture market development policy environment.
  2. Enhanced services and capacities of key public institutions to support the development of targeted Indian agri-food value chains and commodities.
  3. Increased access to European Union markets for targeted Indian agri-food commodities.
  4. Increased exports of targeted Indian agri-food commodities.
  5. Improved knowledge, skills, and profitability of supported Farmer Producer Groups.
