Jack Dean, better known by his online alias JaackMaate is a YouTuber, Podcast host, presenter and comedian.[1] Beginning his career as a commentary YouTuber, Dean has since expanded to stand-up comedy[2], poker [3]and darts[4]. He is the host of comedy podcast series JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast, which consistently tops the Spotify most-listened charts. [5] [6] In 2020, Dean became a presenter for West Ham United football team. He also gained national media attention when he staged a demonstration in response to Boris Johnson's rule-breaking during the national lockdown. [7] [8]
Career
YouTube
Dean found an audience on video sharing site YouTube through his 'opinionated and frank' commentary on celebrity culture on the site. His criticism included overpriced merchandise sold to fans, subpar content from vloggers and a disconnect from the core audience.[1] This was exemplified in Dean's comedic criticism of vlogger Zoella's advent calendar, which he deemed to be overpriced.[9]
In response to UK Prime Minster Boris Johnson's alleged breaking of lockdown rules, Dean organise one-hundred members of the public to dress as Johnson and protest outside of Downing Street. The stunt received wide media recognition and acclaim.[10] Dean also released a video detailing his efforts in organizing the demonstration.[11]
JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast
Dean has been the host of JaackMaate's Happy Hour podcast since 2018.[12] Initially, the project started with focus on YouTube and he hosted alongside Stevie White and Alex Elmslie. However, after Elmslie's departure Dean shifted focus away from YouTube drama. Elmslie was replaced by fellow YouTuber Dudey Rhino. After Dudey Rhino's departure, Robbie Knox - who often appeared as a guest on the show - was promoted to a main host. Alongside fellow YouTubers and the Main Show, the podcast has had notable guests including Belle Delphine, Ricky Gervais [13]and Raphael Rowe. The show was described by Radio Times as 'intimate interviews with the internet's best celebrities to join the conversation about everything from moral dilemmas to life's big questions' in their show of the week column. [14]
Personal Life
Dean has been open about his diagnosis with OCD and his bouts with anxiety and depression. In particular, his OCD manifests itself as health anxiety, which caused him to avoid seeing the doctor for fear of an extreme diagnosis.[15] [16]
Dean became engaged with long-time girlfriend Fiona South in 2018.[17]
