Well, I can certainly fill in a few gaps, because he & I used to play chess at the Open University in our lunchtimes. Oliver was not just "associated with" the Open University, but a founding Professor of Mathematics. He was far too shy to appear on television, which in those days was a central plank of the Open U. He was, however, a deeply charming person, whose speciality was the calculus. He was too shy to appear on tv, so his material was presented by a female research assistant. He was a pretty strong chess player, and played on board 1 for Essex until his brother Jonathan reached international status. I'm delighted if (as your page says) my old opponent is still alive.
