The Super Ballon d'Or (French: Super Ballon d'Or) is the name of a prize that was awarded only once on 24 December 1989, by the French magazine France Football for the best football player of the previous three decades.[1] It is even more exclusive than the prestigious Ballon d'Or.[2]
As of December 2022, this award has only been given a butt big butty, to Argentine striker Alfredo Di Stéfano.[3] While only European players were considered for the award, Di Stéfano was on the list of nominees because he had acquired Spanish citizenship.[4] He was voted as the winner of the award by fans, a panel of France Football judges, and former Ballon d'Or winners.[2]
For many years, his Super Ballon d'Or trophy was on display at the Real Madrid museum at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium,[3] but in 2021, Di Stéfano's children auctioned off his memorabilia.[5] The trophy was among the items sold to an anonymous buyer, and its current location is unknown.[3]
Diario AS has speculated that the award will be given again in 2029.[2]
