Talk:Characters in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Mido's Descendant
[edit]On Fado's bio, it says that the figurine states he idolizes Saria and is the descendant of Mido. I don't see anywhere where it says that. --24.91.78.26 22:28, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Fishing Village?
[edit]On the Link section, it states Outset is a fishing village. When and where in the game was this stated?
- I'd say that it is a residential island. I don't think there is evidence proving of it being a fishing village. But, as the commerce on the islands mostly rely on fishing, it could be stated that all of the islands are fishing villages, but this would be idolizing them. I wouldn't think Forsaken Fortress is a fishing village... YazzaMatazza 14:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Remote Control
[edit]What's with this "remote control" buisness with the King of Hyrule and the ship? I always thought he transformed into the ship. -- Random Contributor
- Because you're never shown how it is that he used the ship, it's open to interpretation. It could be that he transformed into it, or it could be he controlled it from afar via magic.
- Therefore it needs to be reworded, but I'm not sure what wording would suffice. Master Thief GarrettTalk 30 June 2005 02:50 (UTC)
I assume he controls it, as he talks through the stone in Hyrule Castle, but Link and Tetra are still in the boat.
The King's presence in the boat is more of a spiritual possession than a "remote control." Recall the aforementioned point in the game where Link and Tetra are in the boat in Hyrule Castle. The boat now appears lifeless, or rather soulless, but the King still talks through the stone. Speaking via the stone could very well be called "remote." However, when they meet the King in his human appeareance in the chamber, he is still not physically there — after his speech, the vision of his body begins teleporting out of the chamber, proving that he is not in a tangible body.
By the time period of The Wind Waker, this King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule would have aged too much to keep his physical body, even if he was a very young man when Hyrule was flooded. Ganondorf's corporeal reappearance centuries later is an exception, as the seal placed on him in Ocarina of Time supposedly worked around time to a degree. It seems most likely, therefore, that when Hyrule was flooded, the King's soul or being or whatever was placed inside the boat, or maybe even something else first. But how could the King be alive in a physical body controlling the boat from afar? That seems unlikely.
--Tryforceful 03:38, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
It definitely is more of a possession than it is remote control. If he controlled the boat remotely, then he would have been able to guard Princess Zelda down in Hyrule Castle. But, after the exchange of words in the Master Sword's chamber, he simply tells her to stay there and hide, and he leaves, thus nullifying the fact that he's controlling the boat remotely.

Links
[edit]I'm just going around mixing all the Majora's Mask links and I noticed that the links in this article are really bad for redirects - if anyone has time, could they fix that please? Shamess 20:22, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Thumbnails
[edit]Can we get rid of the borders and captions from the images? To be fair, the images are right next to the descriptions - it's pretty obvious which picture is which.CtrlC CtrlV 22:32, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Minor characters?
[edit]Is there any chance of adding some minor characters, like some Windfall residents, or the funny boat people who talk about Grappling hooks. I would like to see it, or is this limited to just the main characters? Ashnard talk 22:08, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- I don't see how we really could without directly copying the Nintendo Gallery.KrytenKoro 06:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- But what is this opposed to? If they were bigger characters, then it would just be Original Research. It's hard to say that this is just copying from the gallery when this is less of a crime than writing an unsourced article. Ashnard Talk 09:08, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Boss "characters"
[edit]Since these aren't truly characters, there's little reason for them to be here. Most of the info here is redundant to the Bosses in The Legend of Zelda series page, so any non-redundant info should be moved over, and then the section replaced with

Okay, everything here is covered in the main article. It has all been deleted now. I've left a link to the main boss article. Ashnard Talk 10:07, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
reversion of edits
[edit]I had to do a full revert because so many of my other edits were changed back. I looked at what was removed from each of the three sections, and most of it is either OR or just confusing, like this:
Ganondorf apparently is not the last Gerudo alive, as shown in screenshots of Phatom Hourglass, the Gerudo being a race of tall, slender beings of Gerudo Valley from Ocarina of Time.
when no mention of him being the last was made before this section.KrytenKoro 06:50, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, but don't delete whole sections then. It jsut happened that your edits coincided with you deleting the whole thing. I agree with your minor edits, but not with you deleting whole sections. Ashnard Talk Contribs 15:00, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- ...Again, the sections don't belong here, and I gave the reason why. If a character has a main article, then there is little to no reason to regurgitate what was already said on it . If this was the list of characters on TWW's page itself, then fine, as its part of the description of the game. At this point, it is just a sub-list, and redundancy is no longer acceptable.KrytenKoro 22:17, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I see that you're very tenacious about this and I'm just not. Okay, at least provide a link to the specific section of the Ganon article. Like: [[Ganon#2002-present]]
- Damnit, you're right. I forgot to do that. Okay, I'll fix that right away. Sorry!
- Cheers. Ashnard Talk Contribs 13:09, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
- Don't simply leave it blank. If you want to link to their respective character pages, then fine, but that doesn't mean you should leave it blank. Look at the sections concerning Tingle and the Great Fairy for example. They have links to their pages, but the sections about them in this article also includes their roles/parts in the game. --Superneoking 17:00, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

- Talk to KrytenKoro about a possible revert. I didn't think it was totally necessary either. Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopaedia. Ashnard Talk Contribs 17:31, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it just seems that an appropriate description (i.e., non-plot regurgitation) would be short enough that it would be the same thing as on the main page - I know that on the Twilight Princess page, they had nothing there EXCEPT plot regurgitation - part of this is that as the main characters, the plot IS about them - for Tingle and the Great Fairies (who I still think is probably redundant), the plot is NOT about them - thus, info could be said that would possibly be appropriate here.
- I guess, to make myself more clear - at most, there should be a short introduction what the character is on this page - like "Link is a native of Outset Island who has recently reached the "age of maturity", and shortly afterward had his sister Aryll kidnapped by the Helmaroc King, thus starting the plot of the game". The other type of stuff that was there - like "More emphasis is put on Link's facial expressions" - ONLY makes sense in the context of the development of the character throughout the series. Or, the plot regurgitation, or possibly his personality - a short plot summary should be on the main article, to explain what is going on, and his personality might work here, but is probably part of the development of the character, thus only making sense on the main article. While, no, this is not a paper 'pedia, that does not mean that removing redundant info isn't necessary - besides, this is a sublist - it's a place to put the info that didn't warrant it's own article, not a place to include as much info as we can.KrytenKoro 09:09, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

- Basically, a short intro sentence would definitely be good, but anything more would almost certainly be much more appropriate on the main article or game page.KrytenKoro 09:10, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- Calm down KrytenKoro. One thing you need to get out of your mind is the concept of this being a "sub-article". It is a full article and not an alternative to anything. This is not a dumping ground for rubbish, but an article that summarises every character's role. I think we should just put an introductory sentence – as I've seen on some other pages of similar nature. We can still mention their charcaterisation briefly. I do believe it would still make sense even though it is linked to previous characterisations in earlier installments. If a sentence alludes to how it was before, then that is fine. Like: "In the Wind Waker more emphasis is put on Link's facial expressions than in previous characterisations of Link." By the way, I agree with the deletion of redundant info, leaving a section blank becaues there is already similar information elsewhere is different. In summary, I agee with your proposal of a short intro section. Ashnard Talk Contribs 14:55, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- Exactly. It shouldn't be left blank. I have no problem with removing redundancy; I just don't think it should be left blank. As for Tingle and The Great Fairy, I know that they don't play major roles in the game. I was simply pointing out that they had links to their articles as well as a paragraph or two talking about them on the page; I didn't say that they had role that were as important as Ganon, Zelda, and Link. --Superneoking 22:52, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- ..I don't see how I'm not being calm. Yes, Supernoeking, I get that they have their own little bit here - I was just trying to say that I think that had more to do with pretty much anything in Link's section be a regurgitation of the plot.
- It really is a sub-article - if all of these characters were relevant enough to have their own articles, we would not need this page.
- "In the Wind Waker more emphasis is put on Link's facial expressions than in previous characterisations of Link." is specifically the kind of thing that would be least appropriate on this article - it is only relevant as part of the main article, otherwise it is just throwing in a reference that the reader would not understand.

- Anyway - it turns out you're right, I guess. I don't know if this is a good enough parallel, as the FF series does not have a recurring list of characters, but they do do what you guys are suggesting with this:
Squall Leonhart
[edit]Squall Leonhart (スコール・レオンハート, Sukōru Reonhāto) is the primary protagonist and a young student at Balamb Garden, identifiable by the scar on his face that a fellow student, Seifer, inflicted. He rarely speaks and has the reputation of being a lone wolf.[1] As Squall's story unfolds, he becomes fascinated with and falls in love with Rinoa,[1] despite never outwardly expressing such until the ending.[2] Squall is characterized by forlorn memories of standing out in the rain at the orphanage where he grew up, wondering where "Sis" (Ellone, an older girl he saw as a sister-figure) went.[3][4] Squall's weapon is a gunblade, a sword that uses components of a revolver to send vibrations through the blade when triggered.[5] His Limit Break is a series of sword strikes called Renzokuken.[6]
- So, we can do something like that (obviously, with less comprehensiveness, since that is for a main character that is only in that game).KrytenKoro 23:15, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- Basically, this is a good one:
Tingle
[edit]Tingle is a man of 35, but short and immature. He believes he is a fairy child like the Kokiri (and dresses accordingly). He floats high above the ground using a red balloon, and while he's in the air he paints useful maps. Seeing Link's outfit, he shares his "magic words" (Tingle, Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah!) and sells Link his maps.
- Introduces the character's context in the game, without going over things that are not relevant outside of the series-based article.KrytenKoro 23:17, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- No, it's not a sub-article. Maybe in your mind, but not mine. You may call the characters sub-characters by reasoning, but not the actual article. The "facial expression" thing is very relevant to this section of the article. It doesn't have to be totally unrelated to any other Link characterisations. We can't just exempt something just because it deviates from the universe of the article and may confuse readers. If the reader doesn't understand, then they should click on the internal link that I provided in my example. As for your Tingle example, a few things:
- He doesn't float on the red balloon in The Wind Waker
- He doesn't paint maps in the air in The Wind Waker
- Don't add minutiae like the words he chants; it's irrelevant.
Thanks. Ashnard Talk Contribs 15:21, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- ...Let me put it this way. Anything on this page should only be referring to Characters from The Wind Waker. The "facial expressions bit" is about the development of the recurring character of Link - comparing TWW Link to OoT Link is not what this article is about.
- Red Balloon and Maps in TWW:...yes, he does. Especially if you use the Tingle Tuner. In any case, that was copied from the recurring character article, as an example.74.140.121.203 22:19, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
- And yes, this is a sub-article. It cannot stand on its own - it depends on the The Wind Waker article for any hope of existence. If something is a full article, then it depends on no other articles for its own existence. This article does not meet that requirement - it is a modified list. If I may offer my own predictions, letting an article like this to grow more than is reasonable (by regurgitating plot info or info that is best on other articles) will get it deleted like so many other similar articles have.74.140.121.203 22:21, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Merge in Phantom Hourglass
[edit]All that we really need to have a smooth merger is adding a section labelled "characters in Phantom Hourglass and we can list the few major characters in this, such as Links fairy, Linebeck, The Ocean King/Old man, and Bellum. It would cover both, be comprehensive, and reduce down one stubby article. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 04:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- ...but why is this page an appropriate target for a merge? There's no shared info, so it's just going to be putting two disparate articles on the same page. Honestly, if you guys are so desperate to merge all the short articles, merge it to the Phantom Hourglass article. At least it would make sense there. Not even Mr. Lister's Koromon survived intact. 11:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- ...but there IS shared info, mainly about Tetra, and the pirates. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- You mean the {{main|Princess Zelda#Tetra|l1=Tetra}}? Yes, both articles have that, but that doesn't seem to me to be any reason to merge the articles. And the pirates (which aren't even mentioned in the current PH article, for good reason) don't even appear for more than twenty or so seconds, and have absolutely no place in the plot. Actually, they kind of do the same thing in TWW. In fact, Tetra herself serves only as a prop in Phantom Hourglass - her involvement could be summarized with "Jumped on Ghost Ship, got turned to stone, Link rescues her and transforms her back".Not even Mr. Lister's Koromon survived intact. 16:54, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Notability assertion
[edit]This section serves to answer the {{Notability}} tag that was placed on the article in November 2007.
This page documents information relating to the the highly notable The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Various characters here play important parts in the game. This separate page exists to avoid the main article from becoming too long. OrangeDog (talk • edits) 03:42, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
