Keith was the surname of an ancient Scottish family who held the office of Knight Marischal and later Earl Marischal of Scotland. The common surname is derived from this family or the town of Keith in Morayshire.

Keith (pronounced keeth, /'ki:θ/), as a forename is of Scottish origin which means woodland, or forest.
